While it’s unlikely that John Wick star Keanu Reeves will land Time Magazine’s next Person of the Year, despite the Change.org petition, a different honor does seem to be in his destiny. Over the last few years, Time has awarded its prestigious honor to groups of individuals responsible for championing political and social justice.

Though Keanu Reeves secretly donates to charities through a private foundation aiding children’s hospitals and cancer research, Time has been less inclined to honor singular entertainment professionals as of late. On the other hand, People Magazine tends to awards its honor to a showbiz pro who’s looks, and current industry status, warrant the recognition.

Keanu Reeves may be “the most wholesome person alive,” as the Change.Org petition argues; however, this, and his alluring disposition, are not the only reasons People Magazine’s distinction is probably headed his way.

What it takes to win People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive

Every time a new Sexiest Man Alive is announced, excitement and confusion usually follow suit. While some understand the choice, believing the winner to be handsome enough to justify the honor, others find themselves asking, “but why didn’t this perfect specimen of a human not win?” If you’re wondering how Jared Leto, Ryan Gosling, Matt Bomer, and Michael Ealy have yet to score the honor, you’re not alone. The thing is: it’s not just about “the look.”

People Magazine chooses its Sexiest Man Alive based on a number of factors; however, former People Magazine Editor Larry Hacket explained:

“We know it has to be a mix of someone who’s hot but well-known. Not too young, not too old and somebody who, frankly, maybe we haven’t thought of…Sexy certainly has to do with someone being good-looking, and has to do with a certain kind of romantic, flirtatiousness physical appeal that may be beyond just academic appreciation of the way they look. We want some mystery in our sexiness.”

Bustle

When it comes to mystery, Keanu Reeves hit the nail on the head. He may be wholesome, but his private life is just that…private. Paparazzi seems to respect his space, and he manages to exist as an A-lister who avoids the covers of gossip magazines. However, Keanu Reeves doesn’t only fit the editor’s description, he fits the magazine’s tendencies concerning the previous sexiest men.

The Sexiest Man Alive always has a very successful year; Keanu Reeves is killing it with the ‘John Wick’ franchise and voiced Duke Caboom in ‘Toy Story 4’

Though Keanu Reeves was retroactively awarded Sexiest Man Alive for the year 1994 in 2005, he has yet to grace a cover. Thus, he’s still (technically) in the running. If you’re wondering why 1994, that’s the year Speed came out, which brings us to our next point.

The Sexiest Man Alive honor always goes to an industry professional whose career is on the up and up. The three most recent honorees — Dwayne Johnson, Blake Shelton, and Idris Elba — are killing it in Hollywood right now. Blake Shelton is arguably the best coach on The Voice. Dwayne Johnson is seemingly in a new action flick every month, and Idris Elba is set to star in Cats, works as a DJ around the world, and just starred as the villain in Hobbs & Shaw.

With the John Wick series, Keanu Reeves is back on the map; he is back in A-list territory. Keanu Reeves also voiced a character in Toy Story 4 this year, and he is set to star in 2020’s Bill and Ted Face the Music. With the positive attention he’s been receiving, as well as his busy schedule, Reeves is destined for the honor. Anyone else would seem out of the blue, as fans push for him to win Time Magazine’s Person of the Year.
