Kid n’ Play Pay Homage To Salt-N-Pepa: How The Two Groups Met

With iconic hip hop group Salt-N-Pepa’s Lifetime biopic, many are learning just how significant the group is to the industry. Not only did they break barriers for women in hip hop but they also helped a few friends along the way reach their own level of success. One of whom is fellow rap group Kid n’ Play, whom they met before making it big in the music business.

Kid n’ Play and Salt N’ Pepa met while working together at Sears

Salt-N-Pepa met at a local college in Queens, New York where they were both studying to be nurses. Salt was already working for Sears at the company’s call center and helped Pepa get a gig there. 

“I was working at Sears. I was going to school with Pep. Pep needed a job so I told her to come over to Sears. Kid ‘n Play were already there,” Hot New Hip Hop reports Salt revealed in a 2019 interview.

“And then Martin Lawrence came over from D.C. and started working there,” she continued. 

Salt admitted in a recent interview with The Breakfast Club that she did not believe Lawrence was actually funny. Despite such, they all found ways to support one another.

“Everybody had a dream and everybody wanted to do what we’re all doing today and it all worked out. We were telephone solicitors for Sears appliances,” she said.

Both Kid n’ Play and Salt-N-Pepa achieved mega success

Kid n’ Play and Salt-N-Pepa both began achieving their success in the late 80s. They also shared the same manager, Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor during the peaks of their success.

Between 1988 and 1991, Kid ‘n Play recorded three albums together. They achieved even more fame through their cult classic film franchise House Party.

Salt-N-Pepa began releasing music earlier than their friends in 1986. Their debut album Hot, Cool & Vicious sold more than 1 million copies in the US, making them the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum status. They are known as the First Ladies of Hip Hop. years later in 1995, they also became one of the first hip hop female acts to win a Grammy Award.

The friendship between the two groups appears to still be growing strong over 30 years later. Kid took to Instagram to give his friends and fellow rap peers two separate tributes. 

In one post, Kid encouraged his 164k followers to watch Salt-N-Pepa’s Lifetime biopic. The film premiered on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 8 pm EST.

“Watch my girls tonight,” he captioned a promotional photo for the film.

In a follow-up post, Kid shared a photo of Salt-N-Pepa with their former DJ, Spinderella. 

“I LOVE ALL THESE LADIES…We wouldn’t have made it without them-let the flowers commence,” he wrote. Kid also used the hashtag #queens. The post is seemingly a sentiment of love and appreciation for Spinderella who was left out of the film and claims she was pushed out of the group entirely over the past few years.

The Lifetime film included Salt-N-Pepa working with Kid N’ Play during their time at Sears, as well as how they supported one another as their careers rose. They even toured together at one point.

Play revealed to Out Loud with Claudia Jordan that Salt-N-Pepa put a stipulation in their contract for their first major tour that Kid n’ Play were to be the opening acts.
