Kirsten Dunst Revealed Why She Hasn’t Married Jesse Plemons: ‘I Kind of Want to Enjoy My Wedding’

Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons have been an engaged couple for years, but when will they have their wedding? Dunst told Jimmy Kimmel there's one thing that keeps getting the way and there's a reason they haven't just gotten married already.

Real-life couple Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons are co-starring as spouses again in Netflix’s The Power of the Dog. But one thing the actors just haven’t gotten around to is tying the knot themselves — though it seems to be on the agenda. And Dunst spoke to Jimmy Kimmel about exactly why the longtime partners and parents of two haven’t gotten married already.

Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons met and ‘fell in love creatively’ in 2015

According to Dunst, her relationship with Plemons traces back to 2015 when the two met while playing spouses on Fargo. She said she started their relationship by going on a “Jesse Plemons hit” and watching “all of Friday Night Lights for the first time.”

While the two didn’t become an official couple for a while after that, she told Jimmy Kimmel Live they “kind of fell in love creatively first and fell in love as actors.”

“I just knew he was awesome and that we were about to work together,” she explained further. And the rest is a moment in pop culture history — and one of the sweet kinds fans really adore. But while wedding bells are on their list of things to do, one thing seems to keep getting in their way.

Kirsten Dunst: ‘I just kept getting pregnant and I kind of want to enjoy my wedding’

Dunst and Plemons have kind of been together since 2015 and confirmed their engagement in 2017. Then, they had their first child in 2018 and their second baby in 2021. As it turns out, those kids seems to have something to do with why the couple hasn’t officially tied the knot.

“I just kept getting pregnant and I kind of want to enjoy my wedding,” Dunst admitted to Kimmel. She added, “I just want to be able to drink and have fun.”

That seems fair enough! But she also promised, “We’ll do it very soon!”

As Dunst pointed out to Kimmel, there are some long processes involved in getting a baby through infancy that can take away from other joys in life — like sleep and presumably weddings. She shared, “I’ve been sleep-training a seven-month-old, so I had a crying baby all night last night.”

And to add a little weight to the processes of having a still very-dependent infant, that baby is already 22 pounds! “I think my four-and-a-half-year-old is about 30 pounds,” Kimmel shared to emphasize how amazing that really is, and Dunst agreed, “Same with my three-year-old.”

So, it’s hard to blame her for wanting to wait till her youngest is a little less reliant before hosting the wedding of her dreams.

Jesse Plemons is Kirsten Dunst’s favorite actor

If you’re looking for relationship goals, you may need to look no further. While chatting with Kimmel, Dunst’s adoration for her fiancé was on full display. “He’s my favorite actor,” she gushed before adding, “and I’ve made children with him, so, I really, really like him.

And while Dunst praised Plemons’ acting skills, Kimmel took some time to make note of hers. He pointed out that Dunst is being talked about as an Oscar-contender thanks to her acting in The Power of the Dog. But she admitted she doesn’t pay attention to things like that. And that’s not because she’s too busy, but because she says, “That’s bad to do for your brain.”

She explained, “It’s nerve-wracking and exciting,” and more specifically that means, “It would be awesome, but you don’t want to get your hopes up.”

So, it seems she likes to spend time thinking of things she can rely on for certain — like Plemons and their eventual nuptials, whenever they may be.
