Kris Jenner helped build one of the world’s largest media companies through her family, the Kardashian-Jenners. Using their success on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the businesswoman has helped her children capitalize on their fame with beauty brands, clothing lines, a modeling career, and so much more. It would seem that the 65-year-old has always been financially savvy, but that’s not the case.

In fact, during Jenner’s 13-year marriage to her first husband, Robert Kardashian Sr., though she had four children with the late attorney and lived in a lavish home in LA, she never paid one single bill. This lead to Jenner being embarrassed by one thing following their divorce.

Why did Kris Jenner and Robert Kardashian get divorced?

Jenner and Kardashian wed in 1978 when Jenner was just 22 and Kardashian were 33-years old. The duo had met five years prior when Jenner was 17, and she was dating pro-golfer Cesar Sanudo. The pair soon began to embark on an affair. After Jenner turned down Kardashian’s initial proposal, they eventually wed and went on to have their four children, Kourtney, Kimberly, Khloé, and Rob Kardashian Jr.

However, the couple got divorced in 1991 following Jenner’s affair with soccer player Todd Waterman. Kardashian got wind of the affair and had a private investigator look into it which led to the demise of the marraige.

On a 2018 episode of OBJECTified via Page Six, Jenner revealed that the affair is still one of the biggest mistakes of her life. “I had the happiest life you could’ve dreamt about,” she said. “But when you’re in something, sometimes people think the grass is always greener, and that was like what I think I went through at some point.”

After Kardashian filed for divorce, he also cut off every single one of Jenner’s credit cards. “I didn’t have anything,” she shared. “I went to the market one day, and my credit card didn’t work. I had a market credit card, and I’m like, ‘I can’t even buy a tomato.’”

The momager explained to The Wall Street Journal that she began making some drastic changes after a tough conversation with a good friend.

“One day, my friend Shelli Azoff said to me when I was going through my divorce, ‘How much is your gardener?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know,'” she said. “That was the turning point for me. I was embarrassed that I didn’t know. I woke up one day to responsibilities that I hadn’t had the day before. And I needed to figure it out. And the good news is, I pay attention… I’m a quick study, and I knew I had to get it together.”

Jenner has come quite a long way since then. “[There’s] such an enormous sense of accomplishment to be able to figure it all out and pay my own bills and make my own money and do my own taxes,” she told The Wall Street Journal. “There were times when I didn’t have a lot of money, but I was very organized.”
