Lady Gaga met with the Dalai Lama to talk about ‘the global significance of building compassionate cities’

On June 26, 2016, Gaga and the current Dalai Lama, the highest spiritual leader of Tibet, sat down with the United States Conference of Mayors for their 84th annual meeting. The conversation revolved around mental health, yoga, meditation, and kindness. The moderator began by asking the international pop artist why she believes mayors should think about kindness when running their cities.

“Well, the really fantastic thing about kindness is that it’s free,” Gaga told the U.S. Conference of Mayors. “It’s the best resource that we have because you can give and give and receive kindness. The well of it inside of you will never dry up. It can’t hurt you or anybody else. It is the thing that brings us all together.”

His Holiness echoed what Gaga said. He also pointed out that we need to teach compassion and kindness from a young age up through adulthood. That is the only way to create real change in the government, he feels.

“We need long term solutions,” the spiritual leader added. “That we already discussed with the promotion of kindness. More kind actions can really make harmony, peace, and happiness.”

China banned Lady Gaga from touring or selling merchandise in their country

According to NBC News, only moments after the meeting ended, a ban was issued by the Communist Party of China’s propaganda department. Media organizations were ordered to stop playing or distributing her music, and news outlets were expected to condemn the meeting.

The Dalai Lama fled China in 1959, where they call him a separatist and a “wolf in monk’s clothing.”

“The purpose of [the Dalai Lama’s] visits and activities in other countries is just to promote his proposal for Tibetan independence,” China Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a press conference.

“We hope that people from the international community can be fully aware of his true colors and nature,” he continued.

However, His Holiness stands firm on that the fact that he only wants genuine autonomy for Tibet. Since Lady Gaga met with the spiritual leader, she won’t be permitted to perform in China anytime soon. However, she will tour North America and Europe in 2021.
