While it’s easy to swoon over Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s love story in Titanic, their real-life friendship is far from romantic. The two had formed such a brother-sister sort of relationship while filming that Winslet says any romantic involvement with each other would feel “incestual.” Due to their relationship’s goofy nature, DiCaprio would do everything he could to gross Winslet out while filming Titanic. Billy Zane even says, “grossing Kate out was purely Leo’s job.”

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet instantly became best friends during ‘Titanic’

While some actors fail to get along on set, Winslet and DiCaprio quickly became best friends. Luckily, their friendship has spanned over two decades, and Winslet still considers DiCaprio her “closest friend in the world.” DiCaprio, in turn, feels the same way. On multiple occasions, he has stated how much he looks up to Winslet, calling her without hesitation his “favorite actress in the industry.” Yet, at the beginning stages of their longstanding friendship, their behavior was quite goofy.

According to Rolling Stone, the two got along in the same way as freshmen at college. A 1998 issue of Rolling Stone reveals,

“They hit it off the way freshmen at college have hit it off for decades. ‘We’d do the most ridiculous things to each other,’ Winslet recalls. ‘He’d be tickling me, groping me, winding me up. And I’d be doing the same thing back, sort of grabbing his bum.'”

“DiCaprio, 22, seems surprised that Winslet has told me this; his voice turns official. ‘She was my best friend for seven months,’ he says slowly. ‘We’d unload the stresses of the shoot to each other, vent to each other, watch out for each other. Kate was just the perfect person to work with because she was very much one of the guys, and it would have been much harder without her. We were partners.'”

Leonardo DiCaprio actively grossed out Kate Winslet on the set of ‘Titanic’

According to actor Billy Zane, who plays Winslet’s stuffy husband-to-be in James Cameron’s film, DiCaprio actively tried to gross Winslet out. While the cameras rolled, sparks flew all over the place. Yet when the director yelled cut, all the passion was gone. Instead of romantic flames erupting between the co-stars, there was nothing but laughter and fart jokes. According to Winslet, she and DiCaprio would always goof around with each other on set. But the Great Gatsby actor would take his folly to the next level by farting into a jacket and putting it over Winslet’s head.

As told by Rolling Stone,

“Grossing Kate out was purely Leo’s job,” says Billy Zane, who plays her rich, unappealing fiance in Titanic. “He got really good at it. If he wasn’t rolling back his eyelids, he was making objets d’art out of bodily fluids.”

Cameron agrees. He reflects on Winslet and DiCaprio’s goofy behavior, recalling an incident that only the movie’s stars would find hilarious. Cameron remembers the moment in Rolling Stone.

“DiCaprio had to wear a long coat for much of the shoot,” says the director. “He would, like, fart in it, and then sweep the coat over her face. I mean, if anybody else in the world did that, they’d get slapped,” he laughs. “And the other person would walk away and not talk to them for a week. With Leo, Kate would just crack up.”

Winslet and DiCaprio are platonic soulmates, as it seems. And in Winslet’s interview with Rolling Stone, she reveals that she and Dicaprio know everything about each other. The actress recalls an incident where she knew the exact kind of sandwich her co-star preferred for dinner. She admits how nice it is to have a person who she knows inside and out. According to Rolling Stone,

“One night, very late, Winslet and DiCaprio were lying on the deck during a break. An assistant approached for food orders.”

“Leo was so tired,” Winslet recalls; he had his head on Winslet’s stomach and asked for a sandwich. The assistant asked, “What do you want on it?” and Leo said, “Oh, Kate will tell you.” And Leo just kind of fell asleep. “And I did know exactly what he wanted. This kind of cheese and no tomato and no pickle. I absolutely knew. And I thought, ‘God, that’s really weird that I know this person so well.’ It was brilliant.”
