Lisa Marie Presley Threw Her $65,000 Engagement Ring From Nicolas Cage Into the Ocean

There have been a lot of shocking celebrity couples over the years. However, Lisa Marie Presley and Nicolas Cage‘s short-lived marriage in the early 2000s is one for the history books.

The duo dated on and off for two years, and when they eventually wed in 2002, their marriage lasted less than four months. In fact, even before they married, Presley threw her engagement ring in the ocean.

For years, it has been speculated that Cage is obsessed with Elvis Presley. Therefore, it came as a shock to no one that he connected with the King of Rock’s only daughter. Though he was still married to actor Patrica Arquette, Cage met the singer-songwriter at a party.

“I walk into a party not knowing who I’m going to meet, and there’s this beautiful girl standing in the middle of the living room wearing this short leather skirt and this fluffy jacket, and she looks up at me with these big, beautiful, soulful eyes that look like they have a sad story to tell, and I just went ‘Oh.’ I was thunderstruck,” Cage said in an interview with Barbara Walters. “We got to talking, we got to know each other, and she’s hilarious, and she’s a real firecracker, and she tells it like it is.”

The pair embarked on a tumultuous on-again-off-again relationship before finally marrying on Aug. 16, 2002, the 25th anniversary of Elvis’ death.

Both the singer and the actor dealt with the pressures of coming from famous families, and the media frenzy surrounding them did not help either. After just 107 days of marriage, Cage filed for divorce from Presley. The divorce was finalized on May 16, 2004.

At the time, Presley said, “I’m sad about this, but we shouldn’t have been married in the first place. It was a big mistake.” For his part, Cage told Walters, “Oftentimes when you have two people who are very strong and their own personalities and rather intense, sometimes you can have a hard time meshing.”
