Theresa Caputo wants to help people get more comfortable with loss. In her new book Good Mourning, the star of TLC’s Long Island Medium wants to help people deal with daily losses that often go unrecognized. She’ll also be opening up about some of the losses she’s experienced over the years, including her 2017 split from Larry Caputo.

“Grief comes in many forms, death, divorce, loss of job,” she wrote in an Instagram post sharing news of the new book, which is on sale October 6 and available for pre-order now. “It’s my hope this book can help you ritualize and heal from those daily losses.”

In December 2017, Theresa announced that she and her husband Larry were separating after nearly 30 years of marriage. The two were married for 28 years and had two children. But over time, they grew apart. Larry said in an episode of Long Island Medium that not spending enough time together was one reason for the split, along with a “lack of communication.”

“The tension was so bad in the house,” Theresa said on the show. The couple’s divorce was finalized in late 2018.

Theresa says she’s still grieving her marriage

Since separating from her partner of roughly three decades, Theresa has been open about how difficult ending the marriage was.

“One thing that I did learn through this whole thing is that grieving just isn’t for when we lose someone,” she told Bustle in 2018. “I discovered, especially in the last year, that we are constantly grieving. Whether we grieve a job, a relationship — you know I feel like in a sense, I’m grieving my marriage.”

Despite those feelings of loss, she says that the divorce was for the best. “Yes, it’s sad, but Larry and I are in a really good place,” she said. “And to be able to come out of this and realizing that we both have changed, and that we’re going to honor and respect each other, I’m so proud of that.”

Theresa’s own feelings of grief and loss inform her upcoming book.

“I wrote about how divorce for me, that was a loss. I’m still grieving my marriage, my life with Larry for 33 years,” the reality star told People. “And I might grieve that for the rest of my life, but healing is something different. And that’s what I shared, what I learned.”

In Good Mourning, Theresa will also talk about losing a friendship in high school, an experience she said “was very upsetting, and still is to this day.”

She also said that she hoped her book would help people who are dealing with loss due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“I think we’re losing a sense of everything that once was,” she said. “I think that was the biggest statement that I made when I also wrote this book. This book is about daily losses, but also what once was.”

Good Mourning is on sale October 6.
