Romance is in the air on Magnum P.I. Magnum (Jay Hernandez) will have a new love interest when the CBS series returns for its fourth season on October 1. Chantal Thuy of Black Lightning has joined the show’s cast as a new character named Lia Kaleo who has a special connection with intrepid detective Thomas Magnum.

Magnum and Higgins ended ‘Magnum P.I.’ Season 3 as just friends

Leading up to the Magnum P.I. Season 3 finale, there were some hints that Magnum and Juliet Higgins’ (Perdita Weeks) relationship might develop into something more. That was especially true after she called things off with Ethan (Jay Ali) in the season’s second-to-last episode.

But in the season finale, Juliet and Ethan reignited their romance. She even decided to follow her boyfriend to Africa for six months, where he’d be working with Doctors Without Borders. Higgins and Magnum said an emotional goodbye as he expressed his hope she’d be happy with Ethan. While there’s still a hint of some unfinished business between the two, for now, it looks like they’re keeping their relationship platonic (much to the disappointment of fans who ship them as a couple).

With Higgins temporarily out of the picture, Magnum has embarked on a new relationship. When season 4 begins, he’s dating Lia, a Honolulu detective. But the pair are keeping their relationship under wraps, according to a report from TV Line. And Lia has other secrets that will be revealed throughout the upcoming season.

Here’s the full synopsis of the Magnum P.I. Season 4 premiere episode, which is titled “Island Vibes:”

As Magnum tries to keep his new relationship a secret and handles cases solo while Higgins is away, he is tasked with finding a single mom being hunted by two very dangerous gangs. Also, while Higgins is abroad with Ethan, a misstep forces her to assist an old employer, and Rick (Zachary Knighton) gets some bad, but also very, very good news.

Thuy is a Canadian actor best known for playing Grace Choi on the now-canceled CW series Black Lightning. She has also had roles in Madam Secretary and Pretty Little Liars

In a 2020 interview with Deadline, Thuy, who played one of the only Asian superheroes on TV in Black Lightning, spoke about the importance of representation.

“I can’t say this enough, but media and entertainment shape our beliefs, thoughts and perceptions, and it is important for Asian Americans to also have a seat at the table and have our voices heard,” she said. “We are one of the fastest-growing racial groups in the United States, yet we are still greatly underrepresented when it comes to roles in television and film. It’s time for us to have visibility and be seen.”

Magnum P.I. Season 4 premieres Friday, October 1 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
