When it comes to TV shows on our favorite streaming platforms, all the big names fight for the top spot in originals. HBO has already made noise with original shows like Handmaid’s Tale and Game of Thrones, but the more, the better for the network. Mare of Easttown presents the same opportunity.

In fact, fans can’t stop talking about the miniseries, hoping for a season two. Even stars like Stephen King are invested. Here’s what the director and cast members think of a season two and what you can expect from it.

‘Mare of Easttown’ was intended to be a limited series

Mare of Easttown isn’t just another crime/mystery thriller. It’s jam-packed with big names like Kate Winslet, Peter Evans, Guy Pearce, Jean Smart, and more. A renowned female lead guides it, and it has all the juicy features of small-town murder, secrets, personal struggles, and unexpected revelations. Viewers can’t get enough.

Mare Sheehan (Winslet) is a police investigator in a small town in Pennsylvania, where she attempts to keep her life from falling apart while investigating one of the most gruesome murders in the area. HBO adds, “The series explores the dark side of a close community and provides an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present.”

While it has been labeled a ‘limited series’ since day one, it’s very likely its incredible viewer ratings and most-watched season finale episode will have HBO rethinking the opportunity. After all, network originals are all the hype right now and HBO is up against giants like Disney, who has the Marvel and Star Wars series, Netflix’s with Firefly, and Amazon’s The Boys — among several other hits.

Fans aren’t the only ones up for another season of the limited series. In an interview with Insider, director Craig Zobel acknowledges while it was designed as a mini-series, “I think that if enough fans are excited about it, I certainly am fascinated by Mare Sheehan, and it would be good if we could see her more.”

The Hollywood Reporter also reports creator Brad Ingelsby adds to the buss, “If [Kate Winslet and I] could crack a story that we were really proud of and felt like it was a deserving second chapter in Mare’s journey, then maybe.”

As for reprising the role of Mare, Winslet is more than happy to — “I would absolutely love to play Mare again.” This gives fans a lot of hope, making the potential of a season two even more likely.

According to Screenrant, a season two of Mare of Easttown isn’t likely to happen for another two to three years, if it does.

“Ingleby and company will theoretically take some time to consider a series continuation and then reach out to the cast members to see if they’re interested in reprising their roles,” they explain. “As of now, it’s plausible that Mare of Easttown season 2 could premiere in April 2023, or certainly before if all parties involved want to capitalize upon the cultural momentum.”

Without any real confirmation, it’s hard to go beyond speculation. All we can do is wait it out and hope all the important people behind the film feel the same as we do — Mare of Easttown deserves another season. After all, there’s a good chance they will, considering there is a big streaming war for subscribers between networks like HBO, Netflix, Disney Plus, and more.
