Gwen Stacy has appeared in a few Sony Spidey installments — previously as Bryce Dallas Howard in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and then as Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise starring Andrew Garfield. Let’s just say the character’s comic to screen transitions have not been met with widespread positive reception; Spider-Man 3 was a bit of a mess and The Amazing Spider-Man series is often eschewed to the fringes when discussing the Peter Parkers of time gone by

According to Mikey Sutton, who recently provided a scoop to Pete’s Basement — the above-mentioned situation is why Marvel Studios has been hesitant to bring the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pete’s Basement cites the “commercial and critical disappointment that was The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [and] Spider-Man 3” as reasons for the character’s absence.

In Sutton’s three-part Spider-Man scoop jam involving Lords of the Longbox and The Cosmic Wonder as well, the insider divulges a great deal of information concerning Spidey’s future in both the Sony Spider-Verse and the MCU (as well as how the two universes will merge). Then, news concerning future Spidey characters comes to the table. According to Sutton, Spider-Gwen is on the studio’s radar and discussions surrounding a standalone installment have begun.

Not only is Spider-Gwen reportedly coming to the MCU, but the beloved character may also get an entire movie (which usually signals a franchise) and the opportunity to fight alongside some of our favorite Avengers. The report stated:

…Disney has a mad crush on the character. She is incredibly popular, especially with young girls. In fact, her massive following crosses gender and age groups. Marvel Studios wants more than just Stacy to play a supporting role in their Spider-Man movies. They want to produce and release a Spider-Gwen movie, have it fully set in the  MCU, teaming the character with various Young Avengers. No casting has begun for Stacy yet. Discussions for this project have just started.

All things involving Spider-Man are about to get complicated

If Spider-Gwen is coming to the MCU, the narratives surrounding Peter Parker are bound to get complicated, at the least untamably expansive. Rumor has it that Disney is already planning to bring Mary Jane into the MCU, and evidence suggests that Michelle Jones — with her A-plus detective skills — may become the next Spider-Woman.

Not to mention, earlier in the scoop Jam, the possibility of Tom Holland meeting his predecessors — Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield — was discussed. Theoretically, due to upcoming multiverse exploration and the blooming relationship between the Sony Spider-Verse and the MCU (largely via the upcoming Morbius), past Sony and present MCU characters coming together on the silver screen doesn’t seem like as much of a stretch anymore.

In short, if only a handful of the insider leaks surrounding Spider-Man turn out to be true, fans of the web-slinger and all of his associated foes and friends should be quite excited for what the future holds.
