Will Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ Get a Disney+ Release?
Heartbreak struck in 2019 when Marvel Cinematic Universe fans watched Avengers: Endgame. Iron Man’s conclusion brought viewers to tears, whereas Captain America’s bittersweet moment gave them hope. Now, Eternals is almost upon us, and fans are excited to see phase four of the MCU move forward.
2021 film premieres have had hybrid releases, with most Disney flicks following the pattern. The pandemic hit the movie industry like a wrecking ball, so fans wonder if Eternals will be released on Disney+. Could the new Marvel movie have a day and date release?
Marvel Studios released a new ‘Eternals’ trailer
A teaser for the movie was released in May 2021. In August, Marvel Studios released a second, more detailed trailer for Eternals. It emphasizes the storyline and Marvel’s signature effects.
The plot addresses the aftermath of Thanos’ destruction five years before, “But the people of this planet brought everyone back with the snap of a finger,” Ajak reminisces. She reveals that the sudden rejuvenation of humankind brought the energy for the “emergence.”
The Celestials created the Eternals 7,000 years ago to protect humans from their evil counterparts, the Deviants.
The trailer includes the question of why the Eternals weren’t involved in the fight against Thanos. Sersi admits that they were told not to interfere with anything unless the Deviants were involved.
Although the film has a dramatic storyline, it includes its share of comical moments and a strong cast—Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, and Gemma Chan star in some of the main roles.
‘Eternals’ could get a Disney+ release
Eternals has only been confirmed for a theatrical November 2021 release. Hollywood producers and executives have expressed their preference for theatrical releases instead of hybrid or straight-to-streaming premieres.
However, the cinematic landscape has fluctuated; day and date releases for Disney films became the norm, such as Black Widow and Cruella. In July, Disney promoted Jungle Cruise through its major theatrical debut at the Disneyland theme park. Nevertheless, the film was still released on Disney+ Premier Access and was quickly given an early digital release onto all other platforms.
According to an interview with Variety, MCU producer Kevin Feige said he’d prefer a theatrical release. However, he concluded, “We will see where we go with it.”
Certain audiences prefer to watch new flicks from home due to the ongoing concerns over the coronavirus (COVID-19) Delta Variant. But even before the issue grew over the summer, Disney provided its viewers with at-home streaming options.
Therefore, a hybrid release may not be off the table. For now, Eternals will be released in theaters on Nov. 5, 2021.
The ‘Black Widow’ lawsuit could prevent ‘Eternals’ from a streamed release
The news over Scarlett Johansson’s legal battle with Disney has not died down. The Black Widow star is fighting against Disney’s hybrid release of her film on Disney+ and in theaters. She argues that the company promised an exclusive theatrical premiere but profited from its streaming platform.
The war between the actor and the studio continues, as a Disney representative reportedly called Johansson’s lawsuit “callous” and a “disregard” for the pandemic.
Nevertheless, the Marriage Story actor is moving ahead with her lawsuit.
Johansson’s actions greatly impacted Hollywood as celebrities and social media users expressed their support. From this issue, Disney might try to avoid a hybrid release soon. For example, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will not be available on Disney+ until 45 days after its initial release.
