‘Matrix 4’: Sequel’s Title Potentially Leaked, and It’s not Terribly Surprising
The Matrix 4 is set to revive the trailblazing sci-fi franchise later this year and the general public still knows almost nothing about it. Aside from the return of original trilogy co-director Lana Wachowski and cast members, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, nothing has been revealed about how the film will carry on the story in the wake of the 2003 sequels.
Putting potential story details to one side, fans have long-guessed that the fourth film would receive a subtitle eventually, and one most likely starting with “Re” in keeping with the tradition established by The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Now, it appears as though said subtitle has leaked, and it’s one that might not be too surprising to fans
The real title of ‘The Matrix 4’ may have been leaked
The alleged title leak came in a now-deleted Instagram post. In it, a hair and makeup artist shows off what they claim is a gift from the producers of ‘The Matrix 4’ to crew members. The photo includes a snippet of a note that came with the gift, thanking the recipient for their hard work on Matrix Resurrections.
Certainly a title that fits alongside the likes of Reloaded and Revolutions. “Resurrection” is also a popular subtitle for sequels of all stripes, like Alien: Resurrection, Halloween: Resurrection, and The Mechanic: Resurrection. In fact, even before this leak, something like this title had been guessed by fans, given that the film is believed to feature the return of several characters who died in the last film.
How plausible is this leak?
So, how legitimate might this leak be? Well, the Instagram account in question, “shunikat,” belongs to a woman named Shunika Terry. According to IMDb, she is in fact a hair and makeup artist with a resume that includes projects like Bad Boys for Life, Atlanta, and Game Night. Also on her resume? The Matrix 4. Looks like she checks out.
The thank-you note mentions “Lana & James,” whom Terry clarifies are director Lana Wachowski and James McTeigue. McTeigue was something of a protégé for the Wachowskis, serving as an assistant director on the Matrix sequels and going on to direct several films that the sisters produced, like V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin. He is serving as a producer on The Matrix 4, making it logical that he would be mentioned on such a note.
The Matrix 4, or whatever they end up calling it, is set for release on Dec. 21. As a Warner Bros. release in 2021, it will also premiere day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max. It is one of the biggest blockbusters included in the company’s “Same Day Premiere” initiative, alongside the likes of Godzilla vs. Kong and The Suicide Squad.
