MCU Theory: Chris Evans Returns as Captain America, Who Is Actually a Skrull

Chris Evans’ performance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe left fans of the series spellbound. They loved his version of Captain America.

But all good things must come to an end, and Evans run as the first Avenger seemingly ended when his story culminated in Avengers: Endgame. It seemed like the perfect conclusion for Steve Rogers’ storyline, and it seemed to signify the end of Evans as the Captain.

Or was it?

Rumors are currently swirling about a potential comeback for Evans as Captain America. These rumors have left fans online to speculate about how he could make a return. Some fans have a theory that could work.

Evans has spent the last decade dedicating himself to this role. No one could blame him for not wanting to play it anymore. That’s not to say Evans doesn’t appreciate the opportunity or value his time in the MCU. But his comments to Indie Wire reveal someone ready to explore new challenges as an actor:

“It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either…There are other things that I’m working on right now. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together.”

That response may lack commitment, but it doesn’t include him shutting the door on the prospect of a comeback. As with most actors, Evans is looking for good material in which his character can help move the story forward. There is one storyline from the comics that could pave the way for a Captain return.

What is the Secret Invasion?

The MCU’s first three phases followed the Infinity Saga, or Thanos’ attempt to collect the Infinity Stones and destroy half the universe. Since that story has come to an end, Marvel’s next phases will have to incorporate a new overarching story.

One theory fans have speculated about is the Secret Invasion storyline from the comics. Here’s the description of it from Marvel

“While in the grips of paranoia, Earth’s mightiest heroes have to band together to fight off an armada of Skrull ships carrying an army of super-charged alien warriors! Traitors are exposed and lives are lost as the shape-shifting zealots lay claim to the planet, and only by compromising their ideals do the heroes stand a chance!”

The presence of the shape-shifting Skrulls introduced in Captain Marvel could lead to some very interesting possibilities.

One theory for how Chris Evans could return as Captain America

Chris Evans Has Almost Become a Disney Triple Threat — Now Put Him in ‘Star Wars’

MCU fans on Reddit discussed a potential Cap comeback, and one fan brought up the idea of a Skrull pretending to be the hero:

“What if this is for secret invasion and a Skrull pretends to be captain America”

Another fan elaborated that this almost seems like the only reasonable way to bring Evans back as the character:

“This is the only thing that would make sense as it is a departure from his character and he stated before he didn’t want to keep doing these movies as he wanted to get back to acting as other characters.”

So will this happen? Only time will tell. But if Marvel does pursue the Secret Invasion storyline for its next chapter, expect to see heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, and Black Widow potentially return only to reveal that all is not as it seems.
