A brief overview of Kevin Smith’s career and attachment to the world of comic books

Though he’s both an actor and a director, Smith is most acclaimed for his work as a director. He’s primarily known for making low-budget, offbeat comedies with lots of vulgar humor and pop culture homages. Famous scenes from his films are built around references to famous franchises like Star Wars and Scooby-Doo.

Smith is also a big comic book fan. Aside from his movies, he’s most known for hosting the History Channel show Comic Book Men. Smith clearly loves comics. So what are his thoughts on making a Marvel movie?

Interestingly, Smith said he has no interest in directing a Marvel movie. He feels that would take more “talent, tolerance, [and] patience” than he has. The idea of scripting a Marvel movie doesn’t appeal to him either. He said he knows how to write the sort of films he makes but he wouldn’t know how to write a film like Avengers: Infinity War because doing so is a “specialized talent.”

According to comicbook.com, Smith explained “That’s a specialized talent and I’ll tell you why it’s specialized talent because I know how the sausage is made. You put a line here and a line here and it will evoke emotion in somebody…That sh*t shouldn’t work on me and yet when I walk into those movies, they absolutely work. They pull the wool over the eyes of somebody that knows this is a trick. That’s a specialized kind of writing that I can’t do.”

However, Smith said he would like to have some sort of involvement in a Marvel movie. He’d like to act in one. Smith says he’s not the most talented actor out there but he’d like to act in one because those films are his “soap operas.”

In some circles, it’s fashionable to bash Marvel movies. Smith, however, has said he has an emotional attachment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to IndieWire, Smith was one of the filmmakers who defended the MCU from Martin Scorsese’s dismissive comments.

Smith opined “Martin Scorsese probably doesn’t have the emotional attachment to those movies that I do. When he sees those movies, he’s like, ‘That’s a theme park’…I respect his opinion, but I don’t think he has the same emotional attachment that a lot of us have. It’s the men and the women that we relate to in the movie, not the ‘super’ part.” Whether Smith gets to act in a Marvel movie or not, he elegantly articulated why the films appeal to himself and some other fans.
