Method Man and Redman have been partners for decades
Method Man is best known for being part of the iconic hip-hop group, the Wu-Tang Clan. He rose to fame alongside the likes of Raekwon and RZA, and like other Wu-Tang Clan members, eventually made a name for himself as a solo artist with several albums of his own.
Redman was also in a hip-hop group, the Def Squad, and he was an accomplished solo artist as well.
In the late 1990s, the two rappers came together as a duo and began making music together. Method Man & Redman’s 1999 debut album Blackout! sold over a million copies and topped the Billboard charts at the time. They collaborated on the soundtrack for the stoner film How High the following year and finally reunited in 2009 for their sophomore album Blackout! 2.
Method Man was once maced by police after a meet-and-greet
In 2010, Method Man and Redman were reminiscing on their time touring together in a video for 24/7 Hip-Hop. Method Man looked back on an incident from 1998 in which he was detained and arrested in Memphis.
Method Man & Redman were in Memphis for MTV’s Sports and Music Festival and were back in their hotel getting drinks after the show. A crowd of fans forms outside the hotel and both Method Man and Redman sign autographs for the fans. Police arrive soon afterward looking for the Wu-Tang Clan member.
“That man walked right up on me. He didn’t ask me no questions or nothing [and] maced me,” he recounted. As Method Man told the story of his treatment by law enforcement, Redman mocked him for screaming in pain after being maced in his eyes.
Redman helped Method Man escape drug charges
Method Man was then put into the back of a cop car and the officer who arrested him rolled the window down as he tried to contain the crowds of adoring fans. He realized he had a bag of weed in his back pocket and had to get rid of it to avoid a marijuana charge.
“I call my G over,” Method Man said, pointing to Redman next to him. “[The cop] ain’t see this n***a come over, and I’m like, ‘Yo, Doc, I got some weed in my back pocket.’ But my hands were handcuffed behind me.”
“I reach in my pocket, push the sh*t through the window, he takes it, walks off with it,” he continued. “Outta there.” Ultimately, Method Man was processed and released from jail by the following morning.
