Mortal Kombat is one of the biggest movies of 2021. Based on the brutal fighting game of the same name, the film arrived in theaters on April 23, attracting millions of viewers and huge box office earnings. Though critics aren’t exactly loving the script, the characters and their fighting sequences have been big hits with audiences.

Will there be a Mortal Kombat 2, though? So far, there aren’t any approved plans for a second movie, but it seems like it’s only a matter of time. If so, here’s what you can expect from the film.

What will happen in ‘Mortal Kombat 2’? The ending in the first movie teases the direction

Mortal Kombat ended in a way that makes it easy to continue that story, should the team choose to do another film.

A defeated Shang Tsung promised revenge before being sent back to Outworld, where he’ll presumably try to acquire a stronger army, including possibly resurrecting Sub-Zero. Meanwhile, the remaining champions of Earth set out to find more fighters, including Johnny Cage.

With that, it seems a second movie would center a larger, more brutal battle between the two sides. The cast would likely include most of the original characters (RIP Kung Lao), in addition to new actors who would play the next round of fighters.

What has been said about a possible ‘Mortal Kombat 2’

Director Simon McQuoid discussed the possibility of a second movie in an April interview with Variety, saying it hinges on whether fans want one.

“Sequels are a bit tricky because you can’t totally ignore them, because that wouldn’t be a smart move, but none of us used the ‘s-word,'” he explained. “We’d never talk about it in any depth whatsoever because we feel like we have to put all our energy into this film.”

“That being said, if the fans want another one, that’s not for us to decide; that’s for the fans to decide,” McQuoid continued. “Then, we need a couple of joiner pieces that we know can lead us somewhere because there’s a treasure trove of stuff that’s just sitting there.”

If a sequel does happen, McQuoid said he would love for it to be a little more female-centric. “There are some fantastic female characters in Mortal Kombat. And I think we can bring balance there, to a better extent,” he added.

While he didn’t mention anyone specifically, McQuoid pointed out that he’s studied the characters who are “talked about a lot and who are really interesting characters.” So if there’s another movie, there’s seemingly a chance that it could feature popular characters such as Kitana, Sindel, and Jade.

It’s also likely, if it’s approved, that it won’t be out until at least 2023. But in the meantime, Mortal Kombat is playing in theaters and on HBO Max. Enjoy it!
