DC’s ‘Injustice’ Just Shared a Brutal First Trailer With a Devastated Superman

The award-winning ‘Injustice’ video game and comics receive a new trailer for the film adaptation. Imagining a world where the Joker causes unspeakable horrors in Superman’s life, Superman snaps and embarks to impose a dictatorial rule over Earth. The trailer showcases Batman and Wonder Woman struggling to stop the Man of Steel.

DC Comics has never shied away from exploring their multiverse. In DC’s Injustice movie, this alternate Earth imagines what would happen if Superman suddenly snapped. In a heart-pounding trailer, fans get their first glimpses into how dangerous an unhinged Superman can be in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

DC’s ‘Injustice’ features an unhinged Superman

Fans usually equate Superman with a symbol of heroism and justice. The Injustice storyline shatters that. Tearing away his wife Lois Lane and his unborn child at the hands of the Joker causes the Man of Steel to snap.

In an iconic, gore-y scene, Superman interrupts Batman’s interrogation of the Joker and commits his first kill.

Originally a 2013 fighting game, the Injustice: Gods Among Us story expanded through tie-in comics and now an animated film.

And the film boasts an impressive cast to voice the heroes and villains.

Batman, played by This is Us and Smallville’s Justin Hartley, stars alongside Star Trek Discovery’s Anson Mount, playing the revenge-driven Superman. Legend of Korra’s Janet Varney plays Wonder Woman.

The tragic plot of DC’s ‘Injustice’ movie

Most of the trailer shows events set before the start of the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game. Leading up to the tragic decimation of Metropolis, The Joker (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Kevin Pollak) appears from the shadows.

Joker and Harley Quinn (Community’s Gillian Jacobs) work quickly, abduct Lois Lane (anime voice actor Laura Bailey).

The scene cuts from various Justice League members scrambling to reach Lois in time. However, they are unable to, and the trailer lingers on a shot of Superman holding Lois in his arms.

“You took his wife, you took his unborn child, and his city,” Batman narrates in a scene mimicking the opening sequence of the Injustice video game. “Why?”

But of course, the Joker only wanted to cause chaos.

The trailer showcases Superman destroying anything and everything in his way. He smashes through planes, and he levels fields with his lasers. Displaying the abrupt shift from Superman the hero to Superman the dictator is on full display.

The trailer ends teasing the horrifyingly iconic moment where Superman crashes through the wall during Batman’s interrogation of the Joker. The Man of Steel looms over them, and Joker cackles in the background.

Sneak peeks and the expanding ‘Injustice’ universe

The award-winning games and well-received comics have only pushed DC to pursue their Injustice universe further. Now that DC’s Injustice movie joins the mix, who can say how far this twisted Superman can go.

As fans wait for the October release, GameSpot reported that they would have a chance at a sneak peek during 2021’s DC FanDome.

“There will be a virtual event specifically tied to the movie on October 16, which as of this writing will at least include “a sneak peek” at the movie,” GameSpot said.

The success and expansion of Injustice have made fans question if a live-action adaptation could be on the table.

As the DC Extended Universe looks to include more stand-alone films like Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, it seems that nothing is off the table.

The animated film will be available digitally and physically on October 19.
