Jennifer Lawrence is a very acclaimed actress. She’s managed to balance her broad blockbusters with challenging independent dramas. If anyone knows about filmmaking, she does.

Actors often love movies just as much as fans if not more so. Given how Lawrence is one of the most famous actors alive, it might be interesting to know something about her taste in movies. This raises an interesting question: What is Lawrence’s favorite movie?

A controversial and acclaimed director

Woody Allen is among the most controversial directors ever. On one hand, some of Allen’s films like Annie Hall, Sleeper, and Hannah and Her Sisters are considered classics. On another hand, Vox reports he has been accused of sexual assault.

Given the accusation against him, some movie fans feel uncomfortable watching his movies. Others enjoy his movies but feel uncomfortable calling themselves fans of his. Lawrence is not in either of these categories. In a 2012 interview with Rotten Tomatoes, she described Allen’s Midnight in Paris as her favorite movie.

Midnight in Paris is a comedic work of historical fiction. It involves Owen Wilson’s character traveling back in time to the Paris of the 1920s and meeting a number of notable figures. Despite the controversy surrounding Allen, the film performed well critically.

Lawrence gushed over the film and Wilson’s performance in it. “I loved it. It was funny, it was inventive, imagination and dresses and all of our favorite writers. Owen Wilson was hilarious. It was just perfection.”

In the interview, Ryan Fujitani asked Lawrence whether she was a fan of Allen. She answered “Yes, yeah. But I think Midnight in Paris… I know he always gets skeptical when his movies go mainstream, but I love that one.”

Lawrence discussed her love of Allen’s work in a separate interview with Vanity Fair in 2014. In it, she contrasted Allen with fellow comedian Larry David. Discussing David, Lawrence said “I’m in love with him, and I have been for a really long time. I worship Woody Allen, but I don’t feel it below the belt the way I do for Larry David.”

So far, Lawrence hasn’t worked with Allen. Since the MeToo movement began, many actors expressed regret for working with Allen. It’s unknown how Lawrence feels about working with Allen in light of MeToo.

Interestingly, Allen has commented on Lawrence. He told RogerEbert.com he’d work with her. He said he “could probably do something with her–or she would do something with me, is really what the story would be. I would gain more than she would gain…because when you work with these wonderful actors or actresses, they give you far more than you can. I can only supply them with the part, but you hire a Cate Blanchett, and she brings the part alive.”

Lawrence and Allen have expressed admiration for each other. Allen might be the most controversial director in the world. However, Lawrence was still able to find value in his work.
