Netflix absolutely stunned fans when they announced they were canceling their freshman fantasy series, The Irregulars. The series debuted on the streaming platform in March 2021 to rave reviews that people compared to a Sherlock Holmes meets Stranger Things.

Therefore, when Netflix recently announced they were not renewing the show for the second season, fans were absolutely stunned. Why was the series canceled?

What is Netflix’s ‘The Irregulars’ about?

Set in Victorian England, The Irregulars chronicles the lives of a group of teenagers living on the streets. They are called “The Irregulars,” and they work to help Dr. Watson (Royce Pierreson) solve supernatural crimes. However, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) gets all of the credit for their hard work.

Season 1 untangled the mystery of The Rip and revealed what happened to Jessie (Darci Shaw) and Bea’s (Thaddea Graham) mother, Alice (Eileen O’Higgins).

The series also followed the romance between Bea and Prince Leo (Harrison Osterfield) while setting up a friendship between Alice and Sherlock.

However, there was still some unsolved questions at the end of season 1 that fans were expecting to be answered for season 2.

‘The Irregulars’ had already been renewed for Season 2

According to What’s On Netflix, before the first season of The Irregulars debuted, it had already been renewed for Season 2. Netflix was confident in its product, and they already had much more story to tell.

Fans expected to see Watson hire Bea and her friends to help him solve more mysteries. Also, since The Rip was closed, fans were geared up for another mysterious magical terror to come to light. However, that is not to be the case.

Netflix has unexpectedly canceled The Irregulars even though plans for season 2 were already in the works.

Why did Netflix cancel ‘The Irregulars’?

Deadline is reporting that Netflix has canceled The Irregulars even though the series was on Netflix’s top 10 list and despite the fact that it beat out Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in Nielsen’s weekly U.S. streaming charts at the end of April.

Fans are devastated. “I can’t believe The Irregulars was cancelled, why Netflix keep canceling good shows??? I’m not gonna be okay for a while after this,” one fan tweeted. Another added, “Dear @netflix, Please reconsider canceling The Irregulars. I loved that show enough to watch it twice and was one of the shows I was most looking forward to all year. Having it canceled makes me sad.”

Netflix has not revealed why they’ve canceled the show despite its great ratings. However, Netflix has reversed renewal orders in the past for shows like Glow. It has also canceled fan favorites like Tuca & Bertie, and Everything Sucks! with no warning.

The pandemic could be the culprit. The Irregulars, like many shows, had to halt production in March 2020, not resuming until August. Things may have changed drastically for the actors and crew since then, making it impossible for the show to return.
