Netflix surprised music fans last fall with an announcement about an upcoming Selena Quintanilla series. Christian Serratos was introduced in a first look video as the late singer, igniting comparisons between her and Jennifer Lopez.

Though reactions were mixed, some expressed excitement about seeing the late singer’s story unfold on the small screen and who else would join the cast. One rumor is being floated that the series is seeking to cast Beyoncé.

The Selena series will go back to the early years

Dubbed as a coming-of-age story, Selena: The Series was green-lit by Netflix back in 2018. At the time, the streamer released a press statement indicating that the show would capture the star’s pursuit of her dreams as well as her family, music, and the choices the Quintanillas had to make.

Though Selena’s former husband Christopher Pérez is not involved with the project, her family is on board and serve as executive producers. Sister Suzette Quintanilla said this in the Netflix statement:

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives.”

‘Selena’ casting announcements were shared in 2019

When the teaser trailer dropped in November 2019, it came along with some major casting news. Netflix shared that Ricardo Chavira, Noemi Gonzalez, Seidy Lopez, and Gabriel Chavarria all signed on to play members of the Quintanilla family alongside Serratos.

Deadline reported Jesse Posey will play Chris Pérez, and On My Block actor Julio Macias is playing a singer named Pete Astudillo. Other actors involved with the series include Juan Martinez, Daniela Estrada, Hunter Reese Peña, and Paul Rodriguez, Jr.

Part 1 of the series will consist of six episodes and was originally set to be released in 2020. It is possible that production is back underway and casting is still ongoing.

New rumor suggests young Beyoncé will make a cameo

Whenever new shows and films are in development, rumors abound, and Selena: The Series isn’t immune to the effect. Per The Hashtag Show, there’s reportedly a casting call seeking actors to play a pre-teen Beyoncé Knowles and her mother Tina in the show. They included this as an example:

[BEYONCE KNOWLES AT 11] BLACK, FEMALE. BEYONCE, an 11 y.o. sweet girl full of dreams, who also happens to sing, and one day will become the Beyonce we know.

Selena and Beyoncé both have Texas roots and the Black Is King star spoke about meeting the Tejano singer in the Houston Galleria once.

She told MTV Tres she heard Selena’s music on the radio all the time but when she saw her, she didn’t have much to say to the singer except “hello.” Beyoncé said that since she wasn’t a celebrity herself yet she just glanced, spoke, and “kept it moving.”

However, Beyoncé added that listening to Selena’s music helped with her Spanish pronunciation. What if the new series plays up this short mall meeting as a moment between two rising stars? Fans will have to wait and see.
