It’s one of the biggest nights in music. After being postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Grammy Awards occurred in Las Vegas on April 3, 2022. The ceremony featured appearances from the world’s most prominent artists.

One of the night’s biggest awards was the Best New Artist category, recognizing individuals and groups that “achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and notably impacted the musical landscape,” according to the Grammy Award rules.

Nominees in this category include Arooj Aftab, Jimmie Allen, Baby Keem, Finneas, Glass Animals, Japanese Breakfast, The Kid Laroi, Arlo Parks, Olivia Rodrigo, and Saweetie. The Academy named Olivia Rodrigo the winner of Best New Artist.

Thanks to her 2021 release Sour and its single “Drivers License,” Rodrigo earned the 2022 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The 19-year-old singer thanked her friends, her parents, collaborators, and the Recording Academy during her acceptance speech, hugging both Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion after reaching the stage.

“This is my biggest dream come true, thank you so much,” Rodrigo said while holding her trophy.

This win wouldn’t be the only award Rodrigo was nominated for, as this artist received recognition in seven categories. She was also one of the featured performers, taking to the stage to showcase original songs.

In addition to her work as a solo artist, Rodrigo has a relationship with Disney and its streaming platform. She first learned songwriting could be a “viable option” for her career while working on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She later released Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u on Disney+.

Other Best New Artist nominees reached impressive milestones in 2021 and beyond

The Best New Artist nominees featured several noteworthy artists. FINNEAS earned a nomination in this category after snagging Grammy Awards for his work on Eilish’s music. This songwriter previously received a Producer of the Year Grammy Award.

The alternative band Japanese Breakfast is led by New York Times Best-Selling author Michelle Zauner. In 2021, she released the memoir Crying in H Mart, detailing her experience as a Korean-American with a passion for art and music.

In addition to collaborating with Doja Cat on “Best Friend,” Saweetie appeared in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album. The rapper performed “Swan Song” with NIKI — a track featured in Marvel’s feature film.
