Netflix gives a sneak peek at ‘On My Block’ Season 4

On Tuesday (Sept. 7), Netflix unveiled the still images from the fourth season of On My Block. At the end of season 3, Monsé was preparing to attend a boarding school called Mayfield Academy and leave Freeridge. The group of friends made a promise that “nothing was going to change” between them.

However, the final episode tells a different narrative. In the two-year time jump, it revealed that the close-knit group grew distant after Monsé’s departure. At boarding school, Monsé has a new group of friends. Jamal joined the football team. Ruby is dating Jasmin (Jessica Marie Garcia) and doesn’t seem to talk to Jamal anymore. Lastly, Cesar becomes the leader of the Santos, a Hispanic-American street gang.

Although the group of friends has gone their separate ways, they will reunite in the 10 episode season finale. According to the official synopsis from Netflix, it reads: “Season 4 finds our friends two years later, having gone their separate ways. When a secret is unburied, they quickly learn you can’t run from the past, and they will need to stick together to survive.”

The time jump was a complete “reset” for the characters

Many On My Block fans had so many questions following the season 3 cliffhanger. In an interview with AV Club, On My Block showrunner Lauren lungerich explained that the time jump allowed the creators to tell stories beyond high school.

“I feel like this is a great way to kind of reset so that we’re conquering new ground and saying new things about these characters, getting to know them even more,” she said. “We did not do [that ending] as any safety mechanism [anticipating] getting canceled. We were very comfortable ending this knowing that we had a really good shot of getting a season four just because of how much Netflix was loving the cuts. It will all come down to how many people tune in and watch.”
