Netflix’s Daredevil was one of the most popular Marvel series to hit the small screen, and fans were sorely disappointed when it was canceled after season 3. Naturally, the news that Charlie Cox would reprise his role as Matt Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe reignited hope. And recently, we received confirmation that a Daredevil reboot would come to Disney+.

That’s no doubt an exciting development, but it’s left many questioning whether the new show will be as good as the old one. And Steven DeKnight, who served as showrunner for Daredevil Season 1 called the whole thing “bittersweet.”

A ‘Daredevil’ reboot is coming to Disney+

When Matt Murdock showed up in Spider-Man: No Way Home, most Marvel fans assumed he’d join the greater MCU. However, it wasn’t clear if he’d appear in other characters’ projects — like Echo — or headline one of his own.

The answer to that question arrived on May 19, when Variety confirmed that a Daredevil reboot would be coming to Disney+. In fact, there are even two writers associated with the show: Matt Corman and Chris Ord.

Charlie Cox will reprise his role, but it’s unclear if anyone else involved with the Netflix series will return. Considering Kingpin’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) cameo in Hawkeye, he might be a contender.

One person who does not seem to be involved in the upcoming Daredevil reboot is the season 1 showrunner. As one might expect, Steven DeKnight has mixed feelings about Matt Murdock’s upcoming MCU show.

The original ‘Daredevil’ showrunner called the situation ‘bittersweet’

Following news of the Daredevil reboot, one fan asked Steven DeKnight what he thought about it on Twitter. Specifically, they questioned whether he felt OK about having no involvement. And DeKnight’s answer suggests mixed feelings about the upcoming project.

“Bittersweet,” he responded. “But all I want is [a] great Daredevil show I can watch with the rest of the fans!”

That’s something most fans can agree on, especially those who have been begging Marvel to bring the Defenders to the MCU. But will the upcoming reboot live up to the Netflix show? Some have raised concerns following the big announcement.

Although Marvel fans are excited about the Daredevil reboot coming to Disney+, some worry the new show won’t live up to the original. After all, Netflix delivered a dark and gritty narrative fitting of Charlie Cox’s hero.

That’s something viewers enjoyed about the original series. And Marvel’s Disney+ shows have yet to feature such mature content. Moon Knight is probably the MCU’s most similar project to Daredevil, and there’s still a stark difference between the two series.

“I’m excited but at the same time, none of the Marvel D+ shows have come close to the Netflix show,” one fan wrote on Reddit.

Another Redditor added that the Disney+ reboot “will never show violence and emotional themes as complex” as the Netflix shows.

Of course, Marvel could prove such predictions wrong. We’ll have to wait and see what the Daredevil reboot looks like before comparing it to the original. Stay tuned for more updates about Matt Murdock’s return to the small screen.

In the meantime, all of the Defenders series are available to stream on Disney+.
