Fans thought Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes were dating a while ago
Aside from the chemistry the two have in the Netflix series, several other factors led some fans to believe Stokes and Cline were a real-life couple. For one, Stokes left some comments on one of Cline’s Instagram posts that fans dubbed flirting.
“Heart rate… decreasing.. help,” Stokes commented on a photo of Cline from her shoot with 1883 Magazine. Some fans took this to mean they were a couple, especially after Stokes added: “Man, I really stirred the pot here, didn’t I?”
What’s more, the two were quarantining together. Stokes, Drew Starkey, who plays Rafe Cameron, and Rudy Pankow, who plays J.J., were staying in Cline’s apartment. “Through a weird chain of events, we were like ‘Why don’t we do this together?’” Stokes told E! News before he and Cline were publicly a couple.

After weeks of speculating, many fans’ theories were confirmed. Stokes finally announced his relationship with co-star Cline. He shared an Instagram post on June 14 with the caption: “Cat’s outta the bag.” The rest of the Outer Banks cast couldn’t have been happier for their friends.
“Topper punching the air rn,” Cline commented jokingly, referring to her on-screen boyfriend. Austin North, who plays Topper, did have something to say, writing: “YES SIR.” Cline added more seriously: “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” Jonathan Daviss, who plays Pope in the series, wrote: “Well it’s about time.” Pankow also commented: “Boom!!” Fans were also super supportive of the announcement in the comments.
Chase Stokes’ mom told him to make his relationship public
Many fans are curious as to why Stokes chose to take his relationship with Cline public. A conversation with his mom sparked the idea. “I was like, ‘I think I’m gonna post it,’” Stokes told Us Weekly. “She was like, ‘Really? You understand what happens when you do that?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah. I do, Mom. Sure do.’”
A true gentleman, Stokes ran the decision by Cline before officially making the announcement. “Then I texted Maddie, and I said, ‘What do you think?’ And she said, ‘I don’t care.’”
Cline was fine with Stokes’ decision, though she wasn’t aware he was going to make the announcement right away. “OK, but clarification. I thought he meant posting it at some point in the future,” Cline said. “He didn’t clarify what time. So I didn’t know, and all of a sudden [I] get texts, and he says, ‘Oopsie.’ And there it was. Modern romance.”
