Outlander fans can rejoice; the Droughtlander is officially coming to an end. After major delays amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Starz’s hit drama series Outlander has resumed production, and things are about to get even more intense with the forthcoming season.

Since the show is based on the Outlander book series, we know that this season will more than likely focus on Diana Gabaldon’s A Breath of Snow & Ashes and possibly An Echo in the Bone.

Set in 1772, in the years leading up to the American Revolution, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) know what’s coming. Still, Jamie has been tasked with safeguarding the colony for the king. There is also the looming knowledge of the passage from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776 announcing the Frasers’ deaths.

Fans can certainly expect a ton of drama from this season, and a new selfie from Heughan and Balfe proves that they’re ready to get into the thick of it.

How did ‘Outlander’ Season 5 end?

Season 5 of Outlander did not have a joyous ending. In fact, many fans are still traumatized by everything they witnessed. After being kidnapped by Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and his men, Claire was also sexually assaulted. Thankfully, Jamie and Roger (Richard Rankin) and their crew arrived to rescue her.

Lionel initially escaped but later died of poisoning at the hands of  Marsali (Lauren Lyle). Still, the Frasers and their crew are certainly not out of the woods yet. Lionel’s brother Richard (Chris Larkin) has vowed revenge. Also, Roger, Brianna, and Jemmy attempted to travel to the 1960s but remained in the 18th century and are still at Fraser’s Ridge.

With the war looming and enemies made, things aren’t going to be very smooth for the Frasers when Season 6 arrives.

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan just shared a selfie from Season 6 of ‘Outlander’

Despite the difficult subject matter that they often face on Outlander, Balfe and Heughan are obviously thrilled to be back on set. Much to fans’ absolute delight, Balfe just shared a photo of herself and her red-headed co-star on Instagram.

The actors both grinned in the camera, giving fans a glimpse of Fraser’s Ridge in the background. The 41-year-old actor captioned the photo, “Back on the ridge…!!”

Fans were absolutely beside themselves in Balfe’s Instagram comments. “THANK YOU for this more than perfect way to start a Monday morning! So glad to see you both back on the Ridge,” one fan said. ” “U two r so cute!!. thanks for posting on set,” another added.

When will ‘Outlander’ Season 6 premiere?

Outlander Season 6 finally went into production in Jan. 2021, though it was originally supposed to begin filming in May 2020. The eight-month delay means that we might not see Season 6 anytime soon. An early 2022 premiere date seems much more likely.

However, there is some good news. Ahead of the Season 6 premiere, Starz has already renewed Outlander for Season 7. “We are so excited Starz has given us the opportunity to continue the epic Outlander journey,” showrunner Matt Roberts said in a statement via TV Line. “We can’t wait to get into the writers’ room and start breaking Echo in the Bone and look forward to giving the fans another season of this exhilarating story.”
