Outlander is heading into its sixth season. And if it were up to fans, the Starz drama would continue for another six. But in a recent interview, Caitriona Balfe suggested the end may be near. And she admitted season 7 would feel like the best time for the series to bow out.

‘Outlander’ is renewed for Season 7

Outlander Season 6 premieres in March 2022. But Starz renewed the show for Season 7 a year before that, in March 2021.

“The hit series Outlander embodies everything about our initiative, including a powerful female lead character and an amazing team of storytellers,” Starz head of originals Christina Davis said in a statement via The Hollywood Reporter.  “We look forward to following the adventures of Claire and Jamie in America during the Revolution as well as more time travel during this next season.”

The network has yet to disclose plans beyond season 7. But the show is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series. And as the author continues to publish new Outlander books, there will be more of Jamie and Claire Frasier’s story to tell.

Caitriona Balfe suggests ‘Outlander’ Season 7 might be the right time to end the series

Along with portraying the lead character, Claire Frasier, Balfe also serves as a producer on Outlander. And in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, she suggested season 7 could be the best time to wrap the series.

“We will have hit the almost 10-year mark by the end of that, which feels like a nice kind of time frame, but we don’t know,” Balfe said, referring to the 2022 production start date for Season 7. “Those decisions are far above my pay grade.”

Balfe landed the role in 2013. So when Outlander Season 7 premieres in 2023, she’ll be 10 years into the project.

But Caitriona Balfe isn’t closing the door on further seasons

The fate of Outlander past season 7 has yet to be determined. And while Balfe might think it’s a good time to end it, she isn’t closing the door on potential further seasons. In an appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit, the actor suggested the show should continue if it is still creatively strong.

“I think as long as the scripts remain good and we still have new things to explore, I think that that’s always good,” Balfe suggested. “If we can all be excited about the work that we’re doing, that’s to me, the gravy, so, let’s see. “

While Outlander‘s future remains uncertain, there is good news. Starz is considering creating a spinoff series centered on David Berry’s character Lord John Grey. The new show will likely focus on events from Gabaldon’s Lord John series.

For now, fans still have Claire and Jamie’s new American Revolution Adventures to enjoy when the series returns. The Outlander Season 6 release date is March 6, 2022.
