Outlander is currently in production for season 6, and more details are starting to emerge. The upcoming season will be based on Diana Gabaldon’s sixth book A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

According to the official synopsis, fans will see “a continuation of Claire and Jamie’s fight to protect those they love.”

Fans will meet the Christies during ‘Outlander’ season 6

The new season of Outlander will see the arrival of a new family at Fraser’s Ridge – the Christies. In Gabaldon’s Outlander novels, the Christie Family actually arrives during book five, The Fiery Cross. But the Starz drama has saved these characters for season 6.

The Christie family features dad Tom (Mark Lewis Jones), son Allan (Alexander Vlahos), and daughter Malva (Jessica Reynolds), who is actually Tom’s niece.

In the books, the Christies move to Fraser’s Ridge because of Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) standing offer to help the former prisoners of Ardsmuir. Tom is a loyal scot who joined the Stuarts during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. He met Jamie when they were both imprisoned at Ardsmuir.

The new family will cause problems for the Frasers

In the books, Malva becomes interested in Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) work as a physician and is fascinated by her high self-esteem, which was rare for18th century women. But, Malva eventually poses a problem for Jamie and Claire after Claire gives Malva some 20th century sex advice.

Claire tells Malva that women have sex for pleasure, not out of duty to their husband. When Malva eventually becomes pregnant, she claims that Jamie is the father. If the TV series stays true to the books, Malva’s pregnancy will pose a threat to Jamie and Claire’s marriage.

The Frasers try to keep the peace in ‘Outlander’ season 6

According to the official season 6 Outlander synopsis, fans will see a continuation of Claire and Jamie’s fight to protect those they love. But it won’t be easy thanks to “the trials and tribulations of life in Colonial America.”

Establishing a home in the New World is not an easy task. Especially at Fraser’s Ridge, which is located in the wild backcountry of North Carolina. What’s more, they are trying to build a life during “a period of dramatic political upheaval.”

“The Frasers strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which–as Claire knows all too well–is unwittingly marching towards Revolution,” the synopsis reads, according to Parade. “Against this backdrop, which heralds the birth of the new American nation, Claire and Jamie have built a home together at Fraser’s Ridge.”

It’s all about home

As the season 6 synopsis continues, it reveals that Jamie and Claire must now defend the home they’ve built at Fraser’s Ridge. Which was established on land the crown granted to them. They aren’t just fighting against external forces, either. There will also be “increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care.”

“For the Frasers and their immediate family, ‘home’ is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place where they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives,” the season 6 synopsis explains.

“If season 4 asked “What is home?” and season 5 asked, “What are you willing to do to protect your home?” then season 6 explores what happens when there is disharmony and division among the inhabitants of the home you’ve created: when you become an outsider, or an ‘outlander,’ so to speak, marginalized and rejected in your own home.”

When will ‘Outlander’ season 6 premiere?

Because the pandemic pushed back season 6 production about nine months, the cast and crew has just begun filming. This means that the upcoming season of Outlander won’t premiere on Starz until late 2021 at the earliest.
