Over its past five seasons, Outlander has had its fair share of disturbing moments. But one of the most heart-wrenching to watch was undoubtedly Season 1, Episode 16, “To Ransom a Man’s Soul.”

In the episode, Jamie is saved by Claire (Caitriona Balfe) after being brutally raped and tortured by Blackjack Randall (Tobias Menzies). But upon his return, he is severely traumatized, both physically and emotionally. And in a special feature for TV Guide’s Outlander Forever collector’s issue, Heughan revealed that he remembers the episode because it pushed him as an actor.

“Episode 16 is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever filmed,” he said. “Jamie’s torture was extreme and really draining to film for cast and crew, not only for the viewer to watch.”

He says The Battle of Culloden episode stands out

In the TV Guide Outlander issue, Heughan discussed his favorite episodes from each season. He noted that Season 2, Episode 13, “Dragonfly in Amber,” is particularly special because it found Jamie and Claire saying goodbye for the first time.

“Time has run out for Jamie and Claire,” Heughan explained. “It was great to collaborate with Caitriona and find the truth and pain of their parting ways — a magical moment in an incredible location.”

The actor also spoke on Season 3, Episode 1, “The Battle Joined,” in which Jamie fights his last battle as a Highlander. “The Battle of Culloden was very touching,” he said. “A final goodbye to our Scottish clan characters, and it also really marked the end of clan culture and the Highland way of life.”

One of Sam Heughan’s favorite ‘Outlander’ episodes is when Jamie and Brianna meet for the first time

One of the most pivotal and emotionally gratifying episodes of the Outlander series is Season 4, Episode 9, “The Birds & the Bees,” in which Jamie meets his daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), for the very first time. And it’s that heartfelt scene that makes Heughan call the episode one of his favorites.

“Jamie and Brianna finally meeting was such an iconic moment, and Sophie is so fun to work with,” he told TV Guide. “We laughed a lot while hunting bees and this episode is where we see father and daughter really bond.”

Speaking of Season 5, Heughan called out Episode 7, “The Ballad of Roger Mac.” In the episode, Jamie’s godfather and best friend, Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix), dies during a battle with the Redcoats. Heughan says that was especially emotional because he had to say goodbye to his beloved co-star.

“The stakes are so high,” the actor noted.”And it was really difficult to say goodbye to our brilliant cast member Duncan (Lacroix).”

Hopefully, Heughan will have more favorites to talk about when the series returns. Outlander Season 6 hits Starz on March 6.
