Outlander is currently filming its long-awaited sixth season after nearly a year-long delay due to COVID-19. In the meantime, Starz is filling the void in fans’ hearts with the delightfully charming travel show, Men in Kilts.

Fans, however, might still be concerned or simply curious about whether or not Outlander will be renewed for a seventh season. It’s not outside the realm of possibility that Starz would do such a thing, as the series was previously renewed for seasons five and six in one go after season 4 premiered.

Will there be a season 7 of ‘Outlander’?

Sam Heughan plays the male lead on Outlander, Jamie Fraser, a beloved fan favorite. Recently, he’s been doing the press circuit for a number of non-Outlander projects, including Men in Kilts and the espionage thriller film, SAS: Red Notice.

Heughan sat down for an interview with Digital Spy to promote SAS when the topic, inevitably, turned to Outlander. In particular, the outlet was curious about the potential status of a seventh season and when fans might be able to expect an announcement.

“You might find out something very soon,” Heughan said, rather bluntly.

That’s not a whole lot to go on, but there are plenty of other signs that fans should be optimistic about the future of Outlander. For one, creator Ronald D. Moore recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the production was in negotiations with Starz for a seventh season renewal and a spin-off. Heughan and fellow lead Caitriona Balfe are also under contract up through a potential season 7.

Beyond that, Outlander is also simply one of, if not the most popular original series that Starz has right now. While other shows like American Gods and Power Book II certainly keep the coffers full, the network probably isn’t keen to lose its golden goose anytime soon.

When does ‘Outlander’ Season 6 premiere?

Filming began on Outlander Season 6 in late January. Prior to the outbreak of the global pandemic, it was planned to start in March 2020, likely to be done in time for the series’ traditional Valentine’s Day premiere date.

Now, it remains unclear what the timetable is for Outlander‘s return. Given the amount of time that it took for past seasons to go from the start of filming to premiering on Starz, the absolute earliest we might see season 6 is at the very end of 2021.

“We started in January and I guess fans will have to do the maths,” Heughan told Digital Spy. “I can’t do it off the top of my head. But I guess the Droughtlander is going to last a little bit longer.”

Season 6 of Outlander is set to adapt the sixth book in the original series of novels written by Diana Gabaldon, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Gabaldon has written eight books so far, with a ninth one nearly finished. She’s also said that she plans to end the series with the tenth book.
