He also talked about Thomas Shelby’s possible redemption arc, too. Here’s what he said about his character.

Peaky Blinders Season 6 will further explore Thomas Shelby after the events of season 5. In Peaky Blinders Season 5, someone betrayed Tommy and foiled his plan to kill Oswald Mosley. Tommy ended the season with a gun to his head, as it looked like he was going to give up everything to be with his dead wife, Grace Shelby. It’s clear Tommy doesn’t give up, though. And it seems he might even have a change of heart in the new season.

Series creator Steven Knight talked about the possibility of a Thomas Shelby redemption arc. He told Variety that the final season of the show would feature Tommy becoming “good.”

“[The final season] will tell a different story, where Tommy Shelby – who begins as this nihilistic, looking-out only for his family person – will be redeemed, and he will become good,” Knight said. “I want to take him on that journey from the person we saw [in Season 1], to the person he will become in 1939.”

Is Thomas Shelby redeemed? Actor Cillian Murphy talks redemption

Will fans really see Thomas Shelby redeeming himself for all of his wrongdoings in Peaky Blinders Season 6? Cillian Murphy spoke to Esquire about his character and what fans can expect.

“I think that’s what Steve was aiming for, with loads of wrong turns along the way,” Murphy noted. “But I don’t know. I’ll leave that to the court of public opinion. I don’t know if he’s been redeemed.”

No matter how Tommy ends the series, Murphy seemed surprised so many fans found the character to be quite likable despite his ruthless nature. “Duality is what I’m interested in, that thing of: How the f*** can he be such a sensitive, good father but commit this heinous f***ing act?” Murphy continued. “People are willing to spend an awful long time with characters who, if someone described them to you in daily life, you would say, ‘Keep that person away from me.’ Is it only in television that that exists?”
