Madonna once admitted it initially wasn’t easy working with her Neptunes partner. At one point, he’d gotten on the singer’s nerves so much that it brought her to tears.

“He made me cry. I’ve never told that to anybody,” she said in an interview with Cannes (via NME). “You know when you get angry with someone and you start spitting snot?”

In an interview with Nightline, the “Die Another Day” singer went into a bit more detail about her scuffle with Williams.

“I was in a sensitive mood, I was singing and I didn’t understand the rhythm that he wanted me to sing in, and he was kind of giving me a hard time and I was sort of taken aback by the way he was talking to me, so I said ‘You know what? we need to talk’”, she said.

In an interview with Shortlist(via NME), Williams corroborated Madonna’s claims.

“I totally made her cry like. Like a baby. I had to get her a towel,” he said. “We were alone recording the album and she kept talking a lot of rubbish, so I shouted a lot of rubbish and she started crying her eyes out.”

The “Happy” singer admitted that he had some nasty words for Madonna to bring the singer to that point. At the same time, he was surprised she disclosed the incident at all given its sensitive nature.

“To be honest I can’t believe she told someone about it. The whole situation was quite intense. It’s totally weird to make Madonna cry, but even stranger when she tells everyone, ‘Pharrell made me cry,’” he added.

In 2008, Madonna experimented a bit with her style of music with the album Hard Candy. The record saw Madonna collaborate with several heavy hitters in the industry. Aside from Williams, she also collaborated with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, she discussed why she chose these artists to help with her album.

“I didn’t have any idea what kind of music I wanted to make,” she confided. “I just knew I wanted to collaborate with Pharrell and Justin. I needed to be inspired and thought, Well, who’s making records I like? So I went, ‘I like that guy and I like that guy.’”

She admitted it took some time to get used to her new crew, but she appreciated what came out of their collaboration.

“It’s not like we hit it off right away. Writing is very intimate. You have to be vulnerable and it’s hard to do that with strangers. I had ups and downs before everybody got comfortable, but I grew very fond of Pharrell and Justin,” she added.
