Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles haven’t had it easy — especially when it comes to their relationship and the public’s opinions of them. From their infamous affair to the queen’s comments and behavior towards her daughter-in-law over the years, the couple has had to endure quite a bit. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall go way back. In fact, they met in 1971 and had a very close relationship. According to reports from Good Housekeeping, Prince Charles and Camilla met through a mutual friend and began spending time together at his uncle, Lord Mountbatten’s Broadlands estate. However, their time together was cut short as the Prince of Wales was due on the HMS Frigate in early 1973 with the Royal Navy. And, instead of expressing his feelings to Camilla and asking her to wait for him while he was on duty for eight months, he let her go. In their time apart, Camilla went back to her longtime love, Andrew Parker Bowles. Andrew proposed in March 1973 and they married the next year.
That said, even if Prince Charles and Camilla had kept their relationship going, things likely wouldn’t have worked out in their favor — aka the queen would not have approved of their marriage. Because Camilla didn’t come from a family of high enough aristocratic background and wasn’t a virgin (which was a big deal in the royal family back then), the queen likely would have denied their union.
Prince Charles went on to marry Princess Diana, but his feelings towards Camilla never vanished. The Prince of Wales and now Duchess of Cornwall carried out their infamous affair, which resulted in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s divorce and, eventually, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’s marriage.
