During Queen Elizabeth II‘s Platinum Jubilee celebrations Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stayed in the background and out of the limelight for most of the events. While the Jubilee was all about the monarch Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s youngest child, Prince Louis, did steal some of the spotlight.

After the celebrations concluded, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released a collage of photos commemorating the weekend. But not to be outdone the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a rare pic to engage in a social media “photo battle.”

Prince Harry and Meghan release rare photo right after Prince William and Kate’s special post

When the Jubilee celebrations wrapped, Will and Kate took to their social media accounts to thank everyone for joining in the special weekend. They shared several photos of the events and captioned the last pic of Prince Louis and Prince William: “We all had an incredible time, especially Louis.”

That was in reference to Louis’ adorable and mischievous antics that were caught on camera. The little prince was seen casually chatting up his great-grandmother, the queen, on the balcony and covering his ears during the flypast and even being quite a handful for Kate at the Palace Pageant.

By the Monday following the Jubilee, Louis had become the talk of the town and the internet. But later that day, Harry and Meghan reminded everyone that their children were in the U.K. as well and released a 1st birthday portrait of their daughter, Lilibet.

Royal experts discussed Harry and Meghan’s choice to release a rare photo of Lilibet just six hours later.

“It’s a bit of a battle of the photo drop on social media,” Today Extra presenter Belinda Russell said (per Express). “You’ve got Harry and Meghan and then Prince William and Kate post some unseen photos from the weekend.”

Royal expert Russell Myers chimed in: “Of course, [Prince Louis] absolutely stole the show. I mean we’re all thinking about how we should be a bit more like Prince Louis because he looked like he was just enjoying himself massively. These pictures are absolutely gorgeous. The Cambridges at some of the street parties they popped into and some of the behind-the-scenes photos at Buckingham Palace.”

Myers added: “In contrast to the Sussex kids, they were really front and center over … which was very much planned about how to present the future of the monarchy.”

This isn’t the first time the Sussexes have been accused of using a pic to upstage the Cambridges

But this isn’t the first time Meghan and Harry have been accused of trying to battle William and Kate for social media photo supremacy when it comes to their children.

On April 22, 2021, the Cambridges released portraits of Prince Louis ahead of his 3rd birthday. However, that same day a picture of Meghan with her son surfaced online. That circumstance had several social media users questioning the timing and accusing the Duchess of Sussex of purposely leaking the rare photo of Archie to take the attention off Prince Louis.

Meghan and Harry were accused the previous year of taking away from another royal’s birthday too. The pair announced the bombshell news that they were stepping down as senior royals via social media on Jan. 8, 2020; one day before the Duchess of Cambridge’s birthday which was then completely overshadowed.
