Drew and Jonathan Scott started out (and are still) working in real estate. When they were 18-year-old students at the University of Calgary, they purchased their first home in Alberta, Canada. Taking advantage of the need for student housing, they fixed up an old student house and charged students $800 a month in rent, reports Money.

The money they earned from their real estate business helped them earn enough money to buy their first investment property for $200,000. They purchased the home with a $250 down payment and flipped it to make a $50,000 profit. Over the years, Drew and Jonathan did quite well for themselves purchasing, selling, and flipping homes. Eventually, they were asked to do HGTV’s Property Brothers.
