Queen Elizabeth II has been Britain’s monarch for more than 65 years and is still working and in good health even in her 90s. With no signs of slowing down anytime soon, people have become interested in her daily eating habits.

Now, her former chef is dishing on what the royal family matriarch eats, what she doesn’t eat, and how many meals she really has every day.

What Queen Elizabeth refuses to eat

Darren McGrady, who worked for the queen for more than a decade, knew his boss’ eating habits inside and out and made sure other kitchen staffers were aware of what to serve and not to serve the monarch and her family. He said that garlic was a big no-no for every royal. The rule is believed to be in place to prevent them from having bad breath when they meet and greet their visitors or members of the public.

“We [could] never serve anything with garlic or too much onion,” McGrady recalled.

He added that the queen enjoys eating fresh fruit such as strawberries, but only when they are in season.

“You can send strawberries every day to the queen during summer at Balmoral and she’ll never say a word,” McGrady explained.“Try including strawberries on the menu in January and she’ll scrub out the line and say don’t dare send me genetically modified strawberries.”

McGrady stated that Queen Elizabeth has always had a pretty healthy diet for the most part but she does have a sweet tooth and really loves chocolate biscuit cake.

“The chocolate biscuit cake is the only cake that goes back again and again and again every day until it’s all gone,” he said. “She’ll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake.”

The former royal chef also revealed that the queen has four meals a day. According to McGrady, she eats breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea (with salmon or cucumber sandwiches), and dinner. However, he told Food & Wine that she usually “eats small portions.”

While the queen always packs in four meals a day, her oldest son Prince Charles only eats two and always skips lunch.

In 2018, Buckingham Palace released 70 facts about the Prince of Wales and revealed that he doesn’t eat the midday meal.

The Daily Mail previously reported that Charles eats a light breakfast and has his one main meal in the evenings.
