Rappers and diss tracks are nearly synonymous. But there are some that are history-making. The deadly beef between Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. that had two cities at odds is one that’ll always be referenced. Another one that caught many by surprise is the drama between Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma. And according to Remy, the beef came out of nowhere.

The two released diss tracks about one another

Remy and Minaj were initially cordial. But things took a turn in 2017 when Remy released “Shether,” a diss track aimed at Minaj. In the song, Remy took shots at Minaj’s career, body, sexual escapades, and family life – specifically Mianj’s brother’s sexual assault case. Minaj shot back with “No Frauds.”

In a 2019 interview with Hollywood Unlocked, Remy explained that after her release from prison in 2014, she and Minaj spoke and agreed to support one another. But she says Minaj didn’t keep up her end of the deal and began to do things behind the scenes to sabotage her career and reputation, which began their longstanding feud

“What led up to the whole ‘ShETHER’ thing was I just kept hearing so many things behind the scenes and I didn’t understand,” Remy said. “Why would you do this to me? I was already annoyed at everything that was going on. I was like, ‘Yo, as long as this is the way it is, nobody—not just me—no women are going to be able to succeed as long as this is how it is. If you don’t sound like this, if you don’t look like this, if you’re not bowing down to her, we’re never gonna get nowhere.”

Remy Ma says their beef came as a surprise

The Terror Squad rapper hasn’t spoken about Minaj much since releasing “Shether.” During a recent interview on Drink Champs, she was asked about her issues with Minaj. Remy said that she was stunned by the behind the scenes drama that went down that led to her releasing the song.

“We had conversations, regular conversations,” she told the show’s hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ DJ EFN. “I never saw that one coming, because I felt like we had a conversation with her, because I’ve been in this predicament before, where I was the girl just coming in…I just always felt like anything I say, people are gonna say I’m talking about her, anything she say, people are gonna say she’s talking about me, so let’s make an agreement that we never talk about each other.”

N.O.R.E. asked “This is you telling her that?” Remy respond: “Conversations. This is not even telling her. It’s like a conversation—a back-and-forth,” she added. “I feel like any woman, you’re supposed to feel like you’re the shit. What you’re supposed to do? Get on a song and be, like, ‘Yeah, I’m number 2, or I’m number 3?’ No. You’re supposed to talk like you’re that bitch and you’re the shit. Just never let it get there. And it was just certain shit that transpired behind the scenes, messages that I seen, that I know wasn’t fabricated. And I was just like, ‘Nah.’”

Nicki Minaj responds to Remy Ma’s recent comments

Minaj caught wind of Remy’s comments and responded under a post on social media by The Shade Room. According to her, Remy is not telling the truth.

“He must be misunderstanding what she saying to him. Did he say? ‘This is you telling her that?’” Minaj wrote. “For the record, I’ve never had this conversation with her or anyone.”
