Of all the original six Avengers — Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Thor — one could argue that Hawkeye and Black Widow have received the short end of the stick. While multiple heroes received standalone franchises and participated in numerous MCU mash-ups, Natasha Romanoff failed to secure a moment in the spotlight until after the Infinity Saga’s conclusion.

Considering Black Widow will be a prequel, many fans have jumped to the presumption — without watching the film — that it will have little impact on the future of the landscape. Some argue that the film’s mere existence operates as a “here-you-go” olive branch to fans who feel cheated when it comes to the character’s individual development. And, if the failure to release a Black Widow movie pre-Captain Marvel, Pre-Spider-Man, and Pre-Ant-Man (all characters who joined way after Natasha came onto the scene) wasn’t enough to anger Natasha enthusiasts, reports suggest that the production company isn’t even too concerned about the film.

Has Marvel Studios been too concerned with other projects to focus on the ‘Black Widow’ prequel?

We Got This Covered (WGTC) reported — relying on insider intel — that “the studio just isn’t as passionate about this particular entry as previous ones.” The outlet goes on to claim that the production, as a result, has been rushed from the start, as the script wasn’t even finished when filming began on the project (which doesn’t sound like the Feige commitment to excellence fans have grown accustomed to).

The outlet notes — and many would believe — that fans’ persistence for a Black Widow installment pushed the movie onto the discussion table when those involved in Marvel Studios’ productions weren’t intending to release such a film. If this turns out to be true, the movie may, in fact, be just a prequel, failing to introduce the Thunderbolts or Deadpool, as was previously reported, to avoid involving the narrative in the MCU’s expansion post-Phase 4.

What should fans expect of ‘Black Widow’: Will the movie live up to MCU standards?

While actors have been said to phone in performances, it’s rare that Marvel Studios would phone in an entire production and, some people involved must be passionate about the project. Fans should expect Scarlett Johansson to give an incomparable performance, as she always rises to the challenge.

With the Red Room coming into play, and Natasha’s “other family” making their way onto the screen, those who have been waiting for a Black Widow film should be satisfied with the narrative, and the spy-thriller approach should separate the film from former superhero spectacles. Hand-to-hand combat and stealth operations will likely be the focal point, over intergalactic battles and mystical powers — a needed divergence and refresh following Endgame.

While Marvel may not be as passionate as the studio usually is, that doesn’t mean that all those involved — actors, cinematographers, writers, stunt doubles, and more —  won’t rise to the occasion.
