Robert Downey Jr. Thinks Matthew Broderick Is Much Better for Sarah Jessica Parker Than He Ever Was
Before Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker got married, the Sex and the City star was in a long-term relationship with Robert Downey Jr.
Although she was madly in love with the Iron Man actor, his struggles with drugs and alcohol addiction ultimately led to their breakup. But in the same year that they split, Parker met Broderick. As of 2021, the couple has been together for nearly 30 years.
And according to Downey, Broderick is a much better lover for Parker than he ever could be.

Parker and Downey met while filming the 1984 movie, Firstborn. They fell in love almost instantly and became each other’s number one priorities. Yet sadly, after eight years of being together, Parker left Downey because of his struggle with addiction. It ultimately became too difficult for Parker to handle. Unfortunately, she started to feel more like Downey’s parent than his lover.

She says that their relationship “taught me a little bit about being a parent, because the way I cared for Downey might be more suitable for a parent.”
Eventually, she mustered up the courage to leave Downey, despite still loving him.
“I just summoned the courage to leave him,” she told Marc Maron on the WTF Podcast. “The biggest, hardest choices about those kinds of relationships are feeling brave enough to leave, even if you think they’re going to die. Because you stay, not because you’re in love anymore- You love this person, and you’re afraid they’re going to die if you aren’t there to shore up their base every single solitary day. I just didn’t want him to die…”

Despite Downey’s heartbreak when the Sex and the City star left him, he is now incredibly happy for his former girlfriend. Downey is thrilled that she has found someone like Broderick to be a good partner for her when he couldn’t offer her the same thing.
“I was in love with Sarah Jessica,” he told The Huffington Post. “And love clearly was not enough. I was meant to move on. And, after some heartache, she was meant to find her home with a great star.” Describing Broderick, Downey said, “He is a lot more gifted and grounded than I ever was.”

Broderick and Parker have been in a relationship since 1991. And according to Parker, she is more invested in their romance than ever before.
“I love him, and I think he’s brilliant,” she said, according to Oprah Daily. “I’m sure I annoy him. He annoys me sometimes… I’m enormously proud of the person he is. I think the longer you can last, the more invested you just are.”
“He’s probably the funniest fellow I’ve met in my whole life,” she’s said of her husband. “He’s so bright, so handsome. I think he’s the most handsome man I’ve seen in my life. And he inspires me… I’m mad for him.”
