Robert Pattinson Lived off His ‘Harry Potter’ Money ‘for a Long Time’
Robert Pattinson has been involved with his fair share of film franchises. Most recently, he portrayed Bruce Wayne in The Batman, which recently announced a sequel. Of course, the actor’s biggest film franchise to date is The Twilight Saga. The five movies were nothing short of a global phenomenon and made Pattinson a multimillionaire and bonafide celebrity. And who could forget Pattinson’s involvement in the Harry Potter franchise?
Robert Pattinson reflects on playing Cedric Diggory in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’
Back in 2005, Pattinson starred in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Portraying Cedric Diggory was a huge deal for the then-new actor. It gave the Remember Me star the opportunity to work on a massive set and develop his craft. And, thanks to the press tour, Pattinson also got to travel around the world to promote the blockbuster film.
While speaking to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Pattinson recalled how working on the fourth Harry Potter film really changed his life. “I remember going to Tokyo for the first time and sitting in my room, looking out over the city and being like, ‘How has this happened?’” Pattinson recalled. “It was really special, and I really like that movie… I wouldn’t be acting if it wasn’t for that.”

But Pattinson didn’t just get great experiences from working on Harry Potter. He also made a pretty penny from the film. While The Lighthouse actor didn’t make nearly as much as Daniel Radcliffe and the other main stars, his check was pretty solid. Since he didn’t have a lead role, it’s unknown just how much money he made for playing Cedric. However, it was enough that he could live off of it for a couple of years.

“I spent a lot of time living off the Harry Potter money,” Pattinson admitted while speaking to GQ. “I moved to an apartment in Soho in London. I really thought I was gonna do music at that point. I don’t know where I had the kind of belief in that, ’cause there was absolutely no one saying that there’s any kind of music career on the table, but I was doing a lot of gigs all the time. I was just constantly doing open mics all the time, and then I ran out of money basically.”

Once Pattinson had used up his Harry Potter money, he started focusing his attention on acting again. He even flew to the United States to audition for some big projects. And, because he was out of cash, he actually crashed on his agent’s couch. But that setup was only temporary. Not too long after, Pattinson booked his life-changing role as Edward Cullen in Twilight. And the rest, as they say, is history.
