What did Meghan Markle reveal about the royal family’s relationship with Archie Harrison?

Meghan Markle identifies as a mixed-race woman, and her pregnancy with Archie signaled a major turning point in the history of the royal family. Her child with Prince Harry would be the first mixed-race member of the British monarchy at that level, and while millions of royal fans around the world rejoiced for the bold new direction, according to Markle, the royal family was more reserved.

According to Yahoo, in the interview, Markle told Oprah Winfrey that the royal family had “concerns and conversations” about what her baby’s skin color would be, prior to his birth. Additionally, she revealed that the royal family didn’t want Archie Harrison to have a title or the security detail that comes with the title. While Markle did not reveal which members of the royal family had those difficult conversations with her and Prince Harry, her revelations are shocking nonetheless.

Has Meghan Markle Ever Won a Golden Globe Award?

As the royal family reels in response to Meghan Markle’s interview, fans are debating the way that the royal family reportedly treated Archie Harrison. Increasingly, fans are seeing the story about Archie as a deeply missed opportunity. As Markle explained in her interview with Winfrey, she was upset at the royal family taking away Archie’s princely title, saying that she was upset at the idea of “the first member of color in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be. It’s not their right to take away,” according to The Guardian

Notably, if Markle’s words are true, it would be a missed opportunity for the British royal family — both in terms of public image and in the advancement of the monarchy. Making Archie Harrison a prince would not only signal that the royal family is ready for a new direction, but it would have served as a way to repair the fractured relationship between Markle and the royals. Unfortunately, all of that is water under the bridge now, as Markle and Prince Harry live out their new lives in California.
