Most Hollywood awards shows honor a lot of the same people. Actors, directors, and even writers are routinely among those receiving nominations for their work. For the most part, the Academy Awards do a solid job ensuring that many of the crew members involved in a movie have a shot at Oscar gold. But there’s one specific part of a production where the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards have the Academy Awards beat.

Who voted on the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards?

Since 1995, the SAG Awards have recognized actors in film and television. And in each division, members from two separate committees select the nominees for the designated categories. At that point, the full membership of Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) can vote on the winners.

More than 160,000 people, according to the SAG-AFTRA website, decide which actors will walk away a winner on awards night. On the film side, the SAG Awards have six categories. These cover lead and supporting roles for female and male actors, performance by an ensemble cast, and another category that sets the SAG Awards apart.

How the SAG Awards is better than the Oscars

Depending on how many categories a given ceremony has, oftentimes a variety of technical craftspeople — editors, composers, costume designers, visual effects artists, etc. — might find themselves with a trophy for their hard work. The Oscars include 23 categories which include many of these crats. However, as many within the industry have routinely pointed out, the Academy Awards still lack a category to acknowledge stunt teams.

On the other hand, the SAG Awards have honored the Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture since 2007. The Bourne Ultimatum won the category that first year at the 14th SAG Awards. And other past winners include The Dark Knight, Skyfall, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Black Panther. Wonder Woman 1984 was the most recent film to win the category. But which movie will take the Stunt Ensemble trophy in 2022?

Which movie will win this year’s SAG Award for Stunt Ensemble?

This year, the Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture category is particularly stacked. The nominees include the stunt teams for Black Widow, Dune, The Matrix Resurrections, No Time to Die, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

According to Gold Derby — which tracks awards season odds and predictions — No Time to Die is the frontrunner right now. But the margins between the five nominees are very tight. All five stunt teams clearly committed to telling these stories, and regardless of who wins, the SAG Awards already made the right call in acknowledging their work.

The 28th SAG Awards air simultaneously on TNT and TBS on February 27, 2022.
