Sarah Michelle Gellar was a TV star before she was old enough to buy alcohol, so it’s not surprising to hear that she has an impressive net worth. But unlike many actors, she’s not interested in flaunting her cash.

In fact, Gellar and her husband lead a frugal lifestyle that includes cost-cutting measures that many college students would recognize. Gellar is careful about how she uses her money. And she’s not only thoughtful about saving her income, but also what she does spend it on.

Life beyond ‘Buffy’

Gellar is best known for her role as Buffy in the cult TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But as The List reports, her career didn’t stop there. She’s appeared in movies such as Cruel Intentions and Scooby-Doo. She’s also been in a number of films with her husband, Freddy Prinze Jr. In fact, the lovebirds met on the set of the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer

Gellar has also turned her love of cooking into an enterprise. She drew on her devotion to healthy food to create a business called Foodstirs Junk-Free Bakery. The company carries baking mixes as well as baked goods. She has also published a cookbook, called Stirring Up Fun with Food. In the midst of all this, she’s been married for nearly two decades, and she and Prinze have a daughter and a son together.

She’s worth a pretty penny

When Gellar first started playing Buffy, she was only 20 years old. According to The Things, she started out making $75,000 an episode. At the time, that probably seemed like a lot of money, but Gellar wasn’t tempted to spend it all on fun things. She put her first check directly into savings. By the time the series ended in 2003, she was pulling in $350,000 per episode.

She still earns residuals from the popular show, but that’s not her only source of income. Between her acting, baking business, and cookbook sales, Gellar is reported to have a net worth of roughly $20 million. Prinze is not far behind, with $19 million to his name. But just because the couple has an impressive income doesn’t mean they live a lavish lifestyle. In fact, they actually do the opposite.

According to The Richest, Gellar and Prinze have a different mindset from many Hollywood stars when it comes to money. Instead of thinking of their wealth as something to show off, they choose to keep a close eye on what they spend and not let it get out of hand. Gellar shops carefully for items, so she can buy them on sale, and she uses coupons.

“Like, if there’s a coupon there, I’m going to use it. Just because you’re successful doesn’t mean that you should be errant in your spending,” she once explained. But she’s not hoarding those pennies she saves. She donates a lot of money to charities, and she also gives generously of her time to causes she cares about.

Gellar says that her mother taught her how important it is to give back to the community, and she and Prinze live by that philosophy to this day. Gellar is one of those rare stars who doesn’t live like most people in Hollywood. Instead of showing off her wealth with fancy trips, red carpet events, and expensive cars, she chooses to be more thoughtful about what she does with her money.
