This past March, Johansson sat down with Vogue to break down 12 of her most memorable fashion looks, beginning in 1996, when she was a child star on the rise.

Viewing a 2003 photo where the young actor sported a “vintage tennis skirt,” Johansson smiled broadly.

“I was also wearing a fashion mullet … My goal here was Bowie-meets-Silkwood vibe,” she said of her hairstyle at the time. “It was a terrible grow-out, as you can imagine.”

In a recent interview with InStyle, Johansson elaborated on her mullet.

“When I look back, it felt like it was beyond forward — it was probably extreme,” she noted. “But now, it’s back, and I still think it was a really cute haircut.

Other stars who’ve embraced the mullet in recent years include Miley Cyrus.

The actor transitioned to more mature roles in 2003

In 2003, Scarlett Johansson wasn’t just working as a model for her friend and designer Tara Subkoff, she told Vogue. She was also working hard to make a name for herself as a serious actor in Hollywood.

Johansson had already appeared in movies such as The Horse Whisperer, Manny & Lo, and Ghost World. 2003 would see her emerge into mature roles, appearing opposite Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. Her work in the Sofia Coppola-directed film earned her critical acclaim and made her a superstar.

In the years that followed, Johansson appeared in movies such as Match Point, A Love Song for Bobby Long, and The Prestige.

As her star in Hollywood rose even higher, her hairstyles and fashion choices also evolved. Eventually, Johansson grew to embrace Old Hollywood glamour, wearing her hair in long, loose waves. According to Hola, Johansson also often wore her hair in soft updos and vintage waves during this period.

Scarlett Johansson has never shied away from a daring fashion moment, as her 2003 mullet proves. She has also experimented with her eyebrows, telling InStyle she used to favor ultra-thin brows.

“I definitely tweezed all my friends’ eyebrows away, which they still give me shit about,” she admitted. “Mine grew back, but I guess my friends’ didn’t, and they’re still pissed about it. Whatever, it was popular back then!”

Although she’s known for wearing designer fashion on the red carpet, Johansson prides herself on keeping things chill in her personal life.

In a 2012 interview with Savoir Flair, the actor opened up about how she would describe her signature style.

“I am not particularly glamorous in my everyday life,” she revealed. “I’m pretty low-key, so, in a sense, it is a character, I guess — a kind of face that you put on when you do that stuff. That’s fun; it’s nice for a little bit. Then you wash all the glamour away when you get home.”
