Horror fans know all too well that none of the genre’s iconic baddies are ever really dead. Take the fifth installment in the Scream franchise, for example. Released more than a decade after its predecessor, the 2022 film brought Ghostface back to life once again. But will Scream 2022 — aka Scream 5 — really kickstart a whole new era for the long-running horror series? Here’s what fans know about the potential for Scream 6.

Neve Campbell has played Sidney Prescott since 1996

One way in which Scream stands alone from most other horror franchises is its singular focus on core cast members. Jamie Lee Curtis and others like her have reprised their horror heroes over the years, of course. But even in the Halloween series — as defined as it is by Curtis’ Laurie Strode — several films don’t feature that character at all. The constant in nearly all horror franchises is the villain, not the hero. Scream remains a rare exception.

Since 1996, Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott has been at the center of every single movie. Even 2011’s Scream 4 — which riffs on the notion of horror reboots and remakes — ultimately remains loyal to Campbell’s status as the series’ definitive “final girl.” Near the end of the film, Sidney even declares that the “first rule of remakes” is “don’t f–k with the original” before defeating the killer. But after Scream 2022, is Campbell still ready for more?

The actor seems open to making ‘Scream 6’ someday

After Scream 2022’s box office success, the possibility of another sequel feels a lot more likely. And if it does happen, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett seem up for the task of taking the franchise even further. Gillett even told Total Film he and his team believe “there is more gas in the tank” and “more stories to be told in Woodsboro and about these characters.” So fans probably haven’t seen the last of Campbell’s Sidney just yet.

“It would seem there’s always more stories to be told in Woodsboro and there is a taste for it,” Campbell told Screen Rant. “So if people love this one, I would imagine there will be an appetite and we, of course, would all love to be a part of it.” Which actors would come back for a proposed Scream 6 remains to be seen, of course. The movie is nowhere near official just yet. But if it comes together, Sidney Prescott will return to face off against Ghostface.

When will 2022’s ‘Scream’ be available to stream at home?

Since Paramount opted to release the new Scream exclusively to theaters, one question many fans have pondered is when Scream 2022 will hit streaming services. The studio previously announced all its future releases will be available to Paramount+ subscribers. Judging by the streamer’s recent activity, fans can surmise the studio’s plans.

In 2021, Paramount gave another horror sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, a 45-day window exclusively in theaters. After that point, the movie was available on Paramount+. Assuming that’s the idea for Scream, fans might be able to see it at home at the end of February 2022. Stay tuned for official word about Paramount’s plans as they go public.
