Bucky Barnes is one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Played by Sebastian Stan, the character has appeared in Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Stan will reprise his role as Bucky Barnes in the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Filming for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is currently halted due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Recently in an Instagram post, Stan made a sly reference to Bucky Barnes while encouraging fans to stay safe during the pandemic.

Sebastian Stan referenced Marvel’s Bucky Barnes on Instagram

Filming for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier might currently be suspended, but Stan is still in character, sort of. On May 9, Stan posted a photo on Instagram wearing a Bilio face mask. In his caption, he made a subtle nod to Bucky and reminded fans to stay safe.

“Well this feels weirdly familiar… #biliomask #staysafe,” the Marvel actor wrote in his caption.

MCU fans quickly caught on to the reference in the comments of the Instagram post.

One fan commented, “BUCKY???”

“The winter soldier was really ahead of his time,” another fan commented.

Sebastian Stan thinks Marvel fans’ love of Bucky Barnes was not immediate

Nowadays, Bucky Barnes is one of the most popular characters in the MCU. Not including uncredited cameros, Stan appeared in five movies in the MCU as Bucky, and he is now one of the title characters in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

While fans love Bucky now, Stan thinks it took a bit of time for fans to fully appreciate the character. According to Stan, he wasn’t really noticed because of the character until Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out.

At Fandemic Tour Houston in 2019, Stan said, “It’s funny, we were at the autograph table an hour ago, and somebody turned to me at one point and said, ‘Did you ever think this was gonna happen?’ I was like, ‘No.’ I actually played this character for at least two, three years before I felt like people noticed.”

He continued, “I mean, The First Avenger — maybe you guys have — but nobody was stopping me on the street. I just treated it like any other character.”

What the actor thinks of playing the character

At Fandemic Tour Houston, Stan told fans what it was like working with Stan Lee to develop Bucky’s character from the comics to the MCU.

“I just wanted to honor the source material, and what Stan Lee had envisioned, and I was really lucky to have met him, and for him to kind of remind me: ‘Whatever you’re doing, just remember he’s a good guy,'” Stan said. “Because the Winter [Soldier] thing is kinda fun, but the guy inside is a good guy. But the MCU differs a little bit here and there, so we had to kind of adjust to that, and in the movie, Bucky Barnes was actually sort of a cooler guy and whatever. And that’s where we ended up today.”
