Serena Williams Refuses to Think About Her Legacy: ‘Let Me Live’

Venus and Serena Williams are two of the biggest names in sports. The tennis stars have been making waves since they were young girls, and these days, with the success of the movie King Richard, more people than ever before are learning about the two prodigies.

In a recent interview, Venus and Serena Williams opened up about their history and what the future looks like for them. But Serena Williams revealed she doesn’t give too much thought to her “legacy.”

What did Serena Williams say about her legacy?

In a February 2022 interview, Venus and Serena Williams opened up about their upbringing and how King Richard allowed fans to look at how they developed their passion for tennis closely. While the sisters acknowledged their effect on history and pop culture, Serena Williams doesn’t care too much to think about what legacy she will leave when she steps away from the spotlight for good.

“Let me live,” Williams joked to Harper’s Bazaar. “That’s something I don’t think about, nor do I want to. I don’t want to think about what I’m leaving. I just think about who I am every single day behind closed doors and behind cameras. And that’s what I focus on.”

Venus and Serena Williams’ projects outside of tennis

The Williams sisters discussed some of their passions outside of tennis in the interview. “I’m so inspired by other changemakers too,” said Venus Williams, citing “design” and “mentoring” as avenues she wished to pursue. The tennis superstar has worked hard to champion worthwhile causes and has long advocated for equal pay.

With such physical prowess, it makes sense they’d consider other athletic avenues. “Serena and I say we’re going to become bodybuilders after tennis. It might be extreme. It might not happen exactly like that, but you never know,” Venus Williams joked. But they also relish taking a step back.

“From such a young age, all we’ve done is work. So I think for Serena and I to explore that freedom is surreal. We’ve never been free.”

Powerful businesswomen, in addition to their efforts on the tennis court, the Williams sisters are known for their bold fashion choices and their lucrative endorsement deals.

‘King Richard’ cements their enduring legacy

Venus and Serena Williams have been famous for a long time. But it was only upon the release of the movie King Richard that many fans understood what the two women went through to reach the pinnacle of success in their chosen sport. The film stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, the ambitious father of Venus and Serena Williams, detailed how he wrote out a specific plan for his two daughters, outlining their future as tennis pros even before they were born.

Although Venus and Serena Williams weren’t raised with privilege, Richard Williams fought for the girls to

access the very best coaches and practice arenas. Eventually, the Williams sisters made it big, becoming the two most prominent names in tennis.

The movie King Richard received praise from critics and fans, with Smith’s performance, in particular, earning acclaim. For Venus and Serena Williams, two women who have already done so much, the next chapter of their lives is bound to be incredible.
