It’s official. A sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is officially in development at Marvel Studios and Disney. But given the first film’s success, the sequel is not the only project pertaining to the world of Shang-Chi in the works. A television series made for Disney+ is also in pre-production.

A ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel and Disney+ series is in the works with director Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm

Per Deadline, the director of Shang-Chi, Destin Daniel Cretton, completed a multi-year deal with Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. One of the first projects under Cretton’s new contract is the sequel to Shang-Chi, which he is set to write and direct.

Along with the sequel, Cretton is also developing a Disney+ series set in the world of Shang-Chi. His new deal allows Cretton to produce many original TV series for both Disney+ and Hulu, whether they are set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or not. And along with his contract, Cretton will produce all of his content under his new production company, Family Owned.

In regards to the Shang-Chi sequel announcement and Cretton’s deal, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said, “Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film, and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”

What happened at the end of ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’?

The first film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was widely loved by critics and audiences alike. Many fans flocked to the theaters to see it, making it one of the biggest films of 2021 so far. And the ending left most people wanting more.

Toward the end of Shang-Chi, Wenwu realized the errors of his ways and surrendered the ten rings to his son, Shang-Chi. The Dweller-in-Darkness then killed Wenwu and terrorized the village of Ta Lo.

But, thankfully, Shang-Chi, Xialing, Katy, and the villagers defeated the Dweller-in-Darkness. Afterward, Shang-Chi and Katy returned to San Francisco. There, Wong summoned them to the Sanctum Sanctorum to discuss the ten rings with Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers. In another post-credits scene, Xialing became the new leader of the Ten Rings.

Both of these scenes are meant to, hopefully, set up the Shang-Chi sequel and the Disney+ series.

Could Xialing be at the center of the new Disney+ series?

For now, we can only speculate about what happens in the Shang-Chi sequel and the Disney+ series. But we have a good feeling that one of the two will focus on Xialing after the Shang-Chi post-credits scene. And it would make sense if the show would be the one to tell her story.

The sequel will most likely follow Shang-Chi as he learns more about the ten rings. A television series would allow Xialing to rightfully step into the spotlight and continue the story of her becoming the leader of the Ten Rings organization.

The release date of both the Shang-Chi sequel and the Disney+ series is unknown at the time of this writing.
