Actor Sharon Stone may have received a lot of praise for her role in Basic Instinct. But when she received award recognition for the role, there were a few who didn’t give Stone that same level of praise. In fact, the actor once revealed she was laughed at for her nomination.

Looking back, Stone couldn’t help but be emotional about winning the Golden Globe award in 1996. She earned the coveted prize for her performance in the Scorsese film Casino. The recognition meant a lot for the star after her very humble beginnings.

“Look, I am a kid from nowhere,” Stone once confided to MSNBC. “I grew up in a farming community. I mean, there were 87 kids in my class. Like, really, one-stop flight town. And I had a very big dream that grew up from watching black and white movies on a TV that had three channels on good days. And bunny ears on top.”

Stone had already been a success in the industry up to the point of her winning the award. But the moment still came as a surprise, as she didn’t believe she’d be chosen despite her accomplishments.

“I’m not the person people pick,” Stone shared. “I’m like the dark of darkest horses, you know?”

Although Basic Instinct was a commercial hit, and even a critical hit to some, the film had its fair share of skeptics. Certain reviewers and film critics didn’t respond well to some of the controversies presented in the film. But this didn’t bother the Basic Instinct star, who felt the film resonated with audiences the way it intended to.

“When the movie was opening, I snuck into one of the biggest and first press screenings. I wore a hat and sat in a dark back corner,” she once said in an interview with Playboy. “Regardless of what people thought of the politics, I sat there and saw the audience scream, yell, laugh, talk to the screen, throw stuff, carry on and have a ball. I don’t give a s*** what they wrote in their magazines. I watched them have fun.”

Stone also asserted that when she got nominated for higher accolades because of the film, some didn’t take it seriously. But she felt she ended up with the last laugh in the end.

“You know, when I was nominated for a Golden Globe for the first film, people laughed in the room, because they couldn’t cope that a film of our kind of controversy got critical acclaim. But you know what? Who’s laughing now? The film is still playing. It’s still being rented. People still know that character by name, and look at the kinds of films that are being made as a result of taboos being broken in the theatre,” she once said according to Pop Entertainment.

The Golden Globes once returned gifts sent to them by Sharon Stone to avoid being bribed

Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who voted on the Golden Globes, were treated to several lavish gifts by the Catwoman actor. Each member allegedly received Coach watches that were valued between $295-395. But former HFPA president Helmut Voss had the watches returned to maintain the integrity of the Golden Globes.

“This watch was way, way, way beyond the edge of the envelope as far as promotional considerations, like T-shirts. We were touched by her generosity, but this is definitely a no-no for a group like ours that wants to protect the integrity of its award,” Voss once told Variety (via Entertainment Weekly).
