As some may know, Stone made headlines not too long ago regarding her controversial statements about Meryl Streep. Given her accolades, Streep is often cited by other actors as an inspiration they look up to.

But Stone asserted that the idolization of Streep might have been excessive since she believed there were other actors just as talented. Yet, these other actors weren’t given the same attention as the Devil Wears Prada star.

“The business was set up that we should all envy and admire Meryl because only Meryl got to be the good one. And everyone should compete against Meryl. I think Meryl is an amazingly wonderful woman and actress. But in my opinion, quite frankly, there are other actresses equally as talented as Meryl Streep. The whole Meryl Streep iconography is part of what Hollywood does to women,” Stone once told Everything Zoomer.

Stone then went on to list the names of actors who she thought matched Streep’s acting abilities.

“Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma Thompson. Judy Davis. Olivia Colman. Kate Winslet, for f***’s sake. But you say Meryl and everybody falls on the floor,” she added.

Although Stone was frank about what she thought of Streep’s acting status, she still held the Oscar-winner in high regard. In particular, Stone admired how Streep portrayed herself physically. Whereas some actors were focused on being glamorous or beautiful in front of the camera, Stone believed Streep looked like a regular person.

“I think that’s why Meryl Streep is working so much, because she looks like a woman we can all relate to,” Streep once told Tatler (via Independent). “I look at her and I think, ‘I’m chasing my kids, I’ve moved my parents in with me, I’m coping with food spills – that looks like me in real life.’”

Stone felt there was a realness to Streep’s physical appearance that reminded her of herself.

“Meryl looks like an unmade bed, and that’s what I look like. To me, that looks true,” she said.

“It might take more effort but you get something nicer to give back to the world,” she said.
